JEE Main 2026 does not require 75% marks to appear, but it is mandatory for admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs through JoSAA counselling.
The National Testing Agency does not require candidates to score 75% marks in Class 12 to appear for JEE Main 2026. However, this rule becomes important during admission to top institutes like NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs through Joint Seat Allocation Authority counselling. Many students remain confused about whether the 75% rule applies to the exam or admission. Understanding this difference is crucial for planning preparation and college options.
JEE Main 2026 75% Rule Explained for Admission
The JEE Main 2026 75% rule applies only at the time of admission, not during the exam stage. To be eligible for admission into NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs, candidates must meet at least one of the following conditions:
- Score 75% marks in Class 12 board exams, or
- Be in the top 20 percentile of their respective board
For reserved categories:
- SC/ST candidates require 65% marks
This rule ensures that candidates maintain a balance between board exam performance and entrance exam scores.
JEE Main Eligibility 2026: Who Needs to Follow the 75% Rule?
The 75% rule is mandatory for candidates who are aiming for:
- National Institutes of Technology (NITs)
- Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs)
- Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs)
Even with a high JEE Main rank, admission will not be granted if the required board percentage is not met.
JEE Main 2026 75% Rule: Who Is Exempted?
Not all candidates need to follow the 75% rule. It is not required in the following cases:
- Appearing for JEE Main 2026 exam
- Applying to private engineering colleges
- Institutions with their own admission criteria
Many private universities accept candidates based on entrance scores without strict board percentage requirements.
What If You Don’t Meet JEE Main 75% Criteria?
Scoring below 75% does not end opportunities. Candidates can still:
- Appear for JEE Main exam
- Apply to private colleges
- Appear for improvement exams
- Explore other entrance exams
Many aspirants choose improvement exams to increase their Class 12 marks and become eligible for JoSAA counselling later.
JEE Main 2026 Admission Strategy for Aspirants
Students targeting top institutes should focus on:
- Strong preparation for JEE Main
- Consistent performance in Class 12 board exams
- Keeping backup college options ready
Understanding the JEE Main 2026 75% rule early helps avoid confusion during counselling and ensures better decision-making.
