The Ministry of Education is examining a proposal that could give Class 12 board examination marks a significant role in NEET and JEE admissions. The reform is part of a wider effort to reduce dependence on a single high-stakes entrance examination and strengthen alignment between school education and competitive exams.

NEET, JEE Admissions May Include 50% Board Exam Weightage Proposal

NEET and JEE admissions could undergo a significant transformation if a proposal being examined by the Ministry of Education is implemented. A high-level committee is considering a framework that may assign up to 50% weightage to Class 12 board examination marks while preparing admission merit for professional courses. The proposal is part of a broader review of India's entrance examination system following concerns over paper leaks, evaluation issues, and increasing dependence on coaching institutes. Although no final decision has been announced, the recommendations under discussion could influence the future admission process for medical and engineering aspirants across the country.

NEET and JEE Admission Reform Proposal Focuses on Balanced Evaluation

The proposed changes aim to reduce the pressure created by a single entrance examination and encourage stronger academic performance throughout the school years. Under the framework being discussed, board examination marks could contribute substantially to admission merit, while NEET and JEE scores would continue to remain an important component of the selection process. At present, admissions to undergraduate medical and engineering programmes are primarily based on entrance examination scores. Board examination marks generally serve as an eligibility requirement rather than a major ranking criterion. The proposed model seeks to create a more balanced admission mechanism by recognising both school performance and competitive examination results. Education experts have long argued that evaluating students through multiple academic indicators may provide a more comprehensive assessment of their abilities compared to relying entirely on a single examination.

Why is the Ministry of Education reviewing the Entrance Examination System?

The review follows growing concerns surrounding the credibility and fairness of high-stakes entrance examinations in recent years. Incidents involving question paper leaks, evaluation discrepancies and allegations of irregularities have triggered nationwide discussions on strengthening examination processes. The Ministry of Education constituted a nine-member expert committee to examine several issues affecting the existing admission ecosystem. The committee has been tasked with studying students' increasing dependence on coaching institutes, the emergence of dummy schools, and ways to improve transparency and fairness in competitive examinations. The committee is expected to submit its recommendations to the government in the coming weeks. Any proposed reforms would require detailed evaluation before implementation.

Proposed NEET and JEE Changes Go Beyond Board Exam Weightage

Apart from introducing greater importance for Class 12 board examination marks, the committee is also examining several structural reforms that could reshape future entrance examinations. Collectively, these proposals are intended to make the admission process more student-centric while improving fairness and accessibility. Among the key proposals under consideration are:

  • Up to 50% weightage for Class 12 board examination marks in admission merit.
  • Better alignment between school curriculum and entrance examination syllabus.
  • Multiple opportunities for candidates to appear in entrance examinations.
  • A gradual transition towards adaptive computer-based testing.
  • Measures aimed at reducing dependence on coaching institutes.

Greater Alignment Between School Education and Entrance Examinations

One of the major objectives of the proposed reforms is to narrow the gap between classroom learning and competitive examination preparation. For several years, students preparing for NEET and JEE have often relied on separate coaching material that differs from regular school textbooks. This has increased financial and academic pressure on families while encouraging parallel education systems outside schools. The committee is examining ways to align entrance examination syllabi more closely with the curriculum taught in schools. Such a move could strengthen the role of classroom education and encourage students to focus more consistently on their regular academic studies. Supporters of this approach believe it could improve conceptual learning while reducing excessive dependence on coaching centres.

Multiple Attempts and Adaptive Testing May Change Future Entrance Exams

Another proposal under consideration involves allowing candidates to appear for entrance examinations more than once during an admission cycle. Providing multiple opportunities could reduce the pressure associated with a single examination day and offer students additional chances to improve their performance. Similar systems are already followed in several national and international computer-based assessments. The committee is also examining a gradual shift towards adaptive computer-based tests, in which question difficulty can vary according to a candidate's responses. Such testing models are designed to evaluate candidates more efficiently while maintaining examination standards. Any transition towards adaptive testing would require extensive technological preparation and consultation before implementation.

What the Proposal Means for Medical and Engineering Aspirants?

If the recommendations receive government approval in the future, students preparing for NEET and JEE may need to adopt a more balanced preparation strategy. Instead of concentrating almost exclusively on entrance examinations, candidates may also need to place greater emphasis on securing strong performance in their Class 12 board examinations. Schools could also play a more central role in preparing students for higher education admissions if entrance examination syllabi become more closely aligned with classroom teaching. At present, however, the existing admission process remains unchanged. Admissions continue to be conducted according to the prevailing eligibility criteria and entrance examination guidelines until any official policy announcement is made by the concerned authorities.

Committee Report Expected Soon as Government Reviews Recommendations

The expert committee is expected to submit its final report to the government in the coming weeks. Following its submission, the recommendations will be examined before any decision is taken regarding implementation. Until an official notification is issued, the proposals remain under consideration and should not be treated as confirmed policy. Students preparing for upcoming NEET and JEE examinations are advised to continue following the current examination pattern, syllabus and admission guidelines issued by the respective authorities while monitoring official announcements for any future changes.
