NBEMS has revised the NEET PG 2026 exam pattern, reducing the total number of questions from 200 to 180 MCQs while retaining the existing marking scheme. The board has also changed the test centre selection process, requiring candidates to choose three preferred states instead of cities during registration.

NEET PG 2026 Exam Pattern Revised: 180 Questions, New Centre Choice Rules

The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has released the NEET PG 2026 Information Bulletin, introducing significant changes to the examination pattern and test centre allocation process. One of the most notable revisions is the reduction in the total number of questions from 200 to 180 multiple-choice questions (MCQs). Additionally, candidates registering for NEET PG 2026 will now be required to select three preferred states instead of preferred examination cities for test centre allotment. Apart from these changes, the information bulletin also outlines the registration schedule, exam date, application deadline, fee details, and updated examination guidelines for postgraduate medical aspirants.

NEET PG 2026 Exam Pattern Revised: Total Questions Reduced to 180 MCQs

NBEMS has officially revised the NEET PG 2026 exam pattern, marking one of the biggest changes in recent years. Previously, candidates were required to answer 200 multiple-choice questions during the examination. As per the revised format, the NEET PG 2026 question paper will now contain 180 MCQs. Each question will continue to have four answer options, from which candidates must select the most appropriate response. Although the total number of questions has been reduced, the examination will continue to assess candidates across the prescribed postgraduate medical syllabus.

NEET PG 2026 Exam Pattern Comparison

The reduction in the number of questions does not alter the overall purpose of the examination, which remains the primary entrance test for postgraduate medical admissions. The revised examination structure is summarised below:

NEET PG 2026 Marking Scheme Remains Unchanged

While NBEMS has reduced the total number of questions, it has not introduced any changes to the marking scheme. The continuation of the existing marking system means candidates should continue following the same examination strategy regarding accuracy and time management. Candidates will continue to receive:

  • +4 marks for every correct answer.
  • -1 mark for every incorrect answer.
  • 0 marks for unanswered questions.

NEET PG 2026 Exam Date and Shift Timing

Along with the revised examination pattern, NBEMS has confirmed the examination schedule for NEET PG 2026. Candidates appearing for the examination should take note of the following important dates:

NEET PG 2026 Registration: Candidates Must Choose Three Preferred States

Another major change announced by NBEMS relates to the examination centre allocation process. Earlier, candidates selected their preferred examination cities, and centre allotment was generally carried out on a first-come, first-served basis. For NEET PG 2026, this process has been revised. Candidates must now choose three preferred states while submitting the online application form. This change is expected to improve examination centre management and streamline the allocation process. According to the revised guidelines:

  • Applicants must select three preferred test states.
  • The first preference should be the state mentioned in the application form.
  • Examination centres will be allotted based on the revised state-preference mechanism instead of city selection.

Why did NBEMS revise the NEET PG 2026 exam pattern?

Although NBEMS has not provided a detailed explanation regarding the reduction in questions, the revised structure is expected to improve examination administration while maintaining the assessment standards required for postgraduate medical admissions. The updated pattern may also help candidates manage their time more effectively during the examination without changing the syllabus or evaluation process. However, aspirants should continue preparing comprehensively, as the syllabus and difficulty level remain governed by the official information bulletin.

NEET PG 2026 Registration Process

Eligible candidates can complete the online application process through the official NBEMS portal. Before filling out the application form, applicants should keep the required documents ready and carefully review all instructions mentioned in the information bulletin. Candidates should verify every detail before final submission, as corrections may only be permitted during the designated correction window. The general application process includes:

  1. Visit the official NBEMS registration portal.
  2. Complete the new candidate registration.
  3. Log in using the generated credentials.
  4. Fill in personal, academic and internship details.
  5. Select three preferred examination states.
  6. Upload the required documents.
  7. Pay the applicable examination fee.
  8. Submit the application form.
  9. Download the confirmation page for future reference.

  • MBBS degree or provisional certificate
  • Internship completion details
  • Medical Council registration certificate
  • Recent passport-size photograph
  • Candidate signature
  • Valid government-issued identity proof
  • Category certificate (if applicable)
  • Other documents specified in the official information bulletin.

Important Instructions for NEET PG 2026 Aspirants

Candidates are advised to read the official information bulletin carefully before submitting the application form. Keeping track of official announcements will help candidates remain updated regarding admit cards, correction windows, and other important examination events. They should particularly note:

  • The total number of questions has been reduced to 180 MCQs.
  • The marking scheme remains unchanged.
  • Three preferred states must be selected instead of examination cities.
  • The application deadline is July 21, 2026.
  • The examination will be conducted on August 30, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM.

How the Revised NEET PG 2026 Pattern May Affect Preparation?

Although the question count has been reduced, candidates should not interpret the revision as a reduction in the examination's overall competitiveness. Preparation should continue to focus on conceptual clarity, regular mock tests, revision of high-weightage subjects, and effective time management. Since the marking scheme remains unchanged, accuracy will continue to play a decisive role in securing a higher rank. Students should also familiarise themselves with the revised state-based examination centre selection process while completing their application forms.

NEET PG 2026 Revised Exam Pattern: Key Highlights

The NBEMS has introduced two major changes for NEET PG 2026. The total number of questions has been reduced from 200 to 180 MCQs, while the existing +4/-1 marking scheme has been retained. Additionally, candidates will now select three preferred states instead of examination cities during registration. The NEET PG 2026 examination will be conducted on August 30, 2026, in a computer-based mode, and eligible candidates can submit their applications until July 21, 2026 through the official NBEMS registration portal.
