IIIT Delhi Launches India’s 1st B.Tech in Computer Science & Economics

The Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIIT Delhi) has introduced India’s first B.Tech in Computer Science and Economics. The new programme has an intake capacity of 20 seats, and the institute has confirmed no increase in tuition fees for the fourth consecutive year.

According to IIIT Delhi Director Prof Ranjan Bose, this interdisciplinary course will enable students to “analyse economic systems and design digital solutions through computing.” He added that the programme aims to bridge technology and finance, preparing students for emerging roles at the intersection of economics and computer science.

Admissions for the newly launched programme have begun through JEE (Main), with 85 per cent of seats reserved for Delhi-NCR students. The course focuses on equipping students with analytical and computational skills that can be applied to solve complex policy and economic challenges.

IIIT Delhi Dean stated that the 20 seats added this year belong to the new B.Tech course. The Dean also confirmed that despite introducing new courses and infrastructure, the fee structure remains unchanged since the past four years. The next review of the tuition fee is expected in February 2026.

Other New Academic Initiatives

Alongside the new B.Tech programme, IIIT Delhi has launched a Postgraduate Diploma and a Minor in Human–Computer Interaction (HCI), focusing on human-centred design. The institute has also initiated a joint M.Tech programme with Université Côte d’Azur, France, allowing three students from each university to study at the partner institution under reciprocal scholarships.

These developments were announced during IIIT Delhi’s 14th Convocation, where 780 graduates received degrees across undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes. Dr Anand Deshpande, Founder and Chairman of Persistent Systems, delivered the convocation address, while Lieutenant Governor and Chancellor Vinai Kumar Saxena and Prof Rajesh Srivastava, Chairman of the Board of Governors, applauded the institute’s achievements in research and interdisciplinary education.

Presenting the Director’s Report 2024–25, Prof Bose emphasized the institute’s mission to help students “treat challenges as opportunities—to think differently, learn from mistakes, and realise their full potential.”
