CBSE Class 12 Maths Paper QR Code Viral After Rick Astley Video

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Class 12 Mathematics question paper created a stir online after a QR code printed on the paper allegedly redirected users to a Rick Astley music video. Images and videos of the question paper quickly circulated on social media, sparking debate and humour among students and internet users. The Class 12 Mathematics exam was conducted on 09 March 2026 from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM across multiple examination centres in India as part of the ongoing CBSE board examinations.

Why the CBSE Maths Paper QR Code Became Viral?

QR codes are commonly printed on CBSE board exam papers as part of the board’s security and authentication system. These codes help authorities verify the authenticity of the question paper and prevent exam leaks. However, several students claimed that scanning the QR code on the question paper opened the music video for “Never Gonna Give You Up” by Rick Astley, a song widely associated with the internet prank known as “Rickrolling.” Rickrolling is a popular online joke in which users are tricked into opening the music video instead of the expected content. The meme became popular on the internet during the mid-2000s and remains widely recognised today.

Social Media Reactions to the Viral QR Code

Soon after the exam, screenshots of the question paper and videos showing the QR code being scanned began circulating on platforms such as X and Reddit. The posts quickly gained attention online, with users reacting with a mix of surprise and humour. Some students joked that a large number of candidates appearing for the board exam may have been “rickrolled.” The incident also raised questions among some users about how such a link could appear on an official examination document. QR codes printed on board exam papers are typically expected to provide authentication or exam-related information

CBSE Response on the Viral QR Code Incident

Following the online discussions, CBSE clarified that the Class 12 Mathematics question papers were genuine and their security had not been compromised. According to the board, the exam papers include multiple security features, including QR codes, to help verify authenticity in case of suspected breaches. Officials also stated that the matter is being taken seriously and appropriate steps are being examined to prevent similar confusion in the future.
