UGC Directs HEIs to Install Sugar & Oil Boards, Conduct Fitness Class

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued directives to higher education institutions (HEIs) to install ‘Sugar and Oil Boards’ and conduct regular nutrition and fitness workshops. The move aims to raise awareness about hidden fats and sugars in everyday foods and promote healthier dietary habits among students.

 

UGC Directives on Nutrition and Obesity Prevention

The UGC notice follows recommendations from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, which highlighted obesity as a serious public health concern in India. Obesity is closely linked to type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and certain cancers. Early interventions in HEIs can reduce the risk of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) later in life. The directive emphasizes the benefits of consuming fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains, which provide essential nutrients and promote satiety. Conversely, processed and sugary foods contribute to weight gain while offering little nutritional value.

 

Implementation of Sugar and Oil Boards in Colleges

HEIs have been instructed to install ‘Sugar and Oil Boards’ in highly visible areas such as corridors, canteens, and meeting rooms. These boards will display key information about hidden sugars and fats in everyday foods, helping students make informed dietary choices. In addition to the boards, colleges are required to conduct regular nutrition and fitness workshops or webinars. These sessions are designed to reinforce awareness about healthy eating habits, promote physical activity, and prevent lifestyle-related diseases.
