The Centre has decided to actively support Indian universities in improving their performance in global rankings, recognising their growing role in shaping international reputation, student mobility, and academic collaborations.
Ministry of Education Launches QS Rankings Training
Ministry of Education organised a national-level orientation and training programme on the QS World University Rankings methodology for vice-chancellors and senior officials of higher education institutions (HEIs). The initiative was conducted in collaboration with QS Quacquarelli Symonds as part of a broader strategy to strengthen India’s global academic standing.
Focus on Methodology, Data, and Reputation Indicators
The training programme focused on helping institutions understand the core parameters used in global rankings. These include academic and employer reputation, research citations per faculty, internationalisation, and data reporting practices. Officials emphasised that a clear understanding of ranking methodologies and accurate data submission are essential for institutions aiming to improve their global positions.
Wide Participation from Higher Education Institutions
The workshop witnessed participation from over 400 stakeholders online and more than 60 participants in person. Attendees included vice-chancellors, directors, and nodal officers representing universities and institutions from across the country. The Ministry highlighted that strategic alignment with ranking indicators must be accompanied by long-term institutional reforms to achieve sustained improvement.
India’s Growing Presence in Global Rankings
The initiative comes at a time when India has recorded its highest-ever presence in the QS World University Rankings. A total of 54 Indian institutions were featured in the 2026 edition, marking a significant increase compared to previous years. The Centre views targeted capacity-building efforts as a way to ensure that higher participation in global rankings translates into better rank positions and stronger international visibility.
Way Forward for Indian Universities
Officials stressed the need for universities to strengthen research output, global engagement, and reputation-building efforts. According to the Ministry, consistent institutional reforms and data-driven strategies will be critical for long-term gains in global rankings. The handholding initiative is expected to continue as part of the Centre’s broader higher education reform agenda.
