This mission‑mode initiative, integrated with educational databases, enabled pupils to get Aadhaar MBU done at their school campuses

UIDAI Covers 1.03 Lakh Schools, Completes 1.2 Crore Aadhaar Updates

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has achieved a major milestone in its nationwide biometric update programme by covering more than 1.03 lakh schools and facilitating mandatory Aadhaar biometric update (MBU) for approximately 1.2 crore students directly at their school locations. This initiative forms part of a mission‑mode effort to ensure that children and school‑aged applicants complete their biometric update requirements (fingerprints, iris and photograph) in a systematic and accessible manner. The programme was executed in collaboration with the Department of School Education and uses integrated data platforms to identify and reach eligible students.

Mission‑Mode Drive in Schools

UIDAI’s drive targeted schools across India to bring biometric update services to students’ doorsteps, reducing the need for families to travel to Aadhaar centres. Under the programme:

  • Over 1.03 lakh schools were covered nationwide.
  • Around 1.2 crore students completed their mandatory Aadhaar biometric updates within the comfortable setting of their own campuses.
  • The effort is linked with educational databases to effectively track and manage pending updates.

The biometric update is mandatory as part of the Aadhaar lifecycle, especially for children who initially enrol without fingerprints and iris data (typically below age five) and need to complete these updates at specified ages. Systematically completing these updates helps ensure the accuracy and completeness of Aadhaar records for school‑aged children.

Importance of Aadhaar Biometric Updates

Mandatory biometric updates (MBU) ensure that the Aadhaar database maintains up‑to‑date and accurate biometric information for all residents. For children, this typically becomes necessary as they grow older and biometric features mature, making re‑authentication possible and required for various services. Integration with systems like UDISE+ — the Unified District Information System for Education Plus — has enabled streamlined identification of students needing updates and helped administrators plan school‑based camps.

What This Means for Students and Families?

Completing the Aadhaar biometric update helps students and their families maintain valid and active Aadhaar records. A fully updated Aadhaar is often required for:

  • School admissions and documentation
  • Government schemes and scholarships
  • KYC (Know Your Customer) processes for bank and mobile services
  • Linking with other identity and educational records

Bringing MBU services into schools has significantly reduced logistical hurdles and improved service uptake among school‑going children.
