The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar in Assam has suspended five Bangladeshi students for their alleged involvement in campus violence and possession of narcotics. The suspended students, who were enrolled under the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) scholarships, will be deported back to Bangladesh.
Clash on September 8
The disciplinary action follows a violent clash that occurred on September 8, when a group of Bangladeshi third-year students allegedly attacked other students on campus. Eyewitnesses stated that the accused students went on a rampage, reportedly under the influence of drugs, and physically assaulted their peers. Several injured students were rushed to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for treatment.
Suspension and Expulsion from Hostel
NIT Silchar Director Dilip Kumar Baidya confirmed that the institute had gathered enough evidence to prove the involvement of the five students in the incident. “They have been suspended for two semesters and will be sent back to Bangladesh. Their hostel facilities have also been withdrawn,” he stated.
Possession of Narcotics
During the investigation, narcotic substances were recovered from the rooms of the suspended students. Dean of Students’ Welfare, S. S. Dhar, said the disciplinary action was taken primarily due to campus violence, but the discovery of narcotics aggravated the charges.
Institutional Action
According to the Director, the suspension will remain effective for an academic year. The institute’s administration conducted a thorough inquiry before arriving at the decision. He emphasized that strict measures are necessary to maintain campus discipline and ensure student safety.
