JEE Advanced 2026, IITs Plan Pilot Adaptive Test Paper

The IIT Council is considering a major reform in the JEE Advanced exam by introducing an adaptive testing system. IIT Kanpur and the Joint Admission Board will conduct a pilot study to evaluate dynamically generated question papers based on student performance.
The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are exploring a significant reform in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced, with a proposal to introduce adaptive testing that generates questions dynamically during the exam. The initiative is being examined by IIT Kanpur and the Joint Admission Board (JAB) through a pilot study before any final implementation. The proposal aims to make the entrance exam more student-friendly and less dependent on coaching-based preparation, while ensuring a better evaluation of candidates’ analytical and reasoning abilities.
What Is the Proposed Adaptive Testing Model?
The adaptive testing model would change how candidates receive questions during the exam. Instead of a fixed question paper for all students, the system may generate questions based on each candidate’s performance in real time. Under the proposed format:
- Questions would be dynamically generated during the test
- The difficulty level could increase or decrease based on responses
- The system would assess quantitative reasoning and problem-solving ability more effectively
This technology-driven assessment model is expected to provide a more accurate evaluation of student capability.
Why IITs Are Considering Changes in JEE Advanced?
The discussion on exam reforms emerged during a meeting of the IIT Council, the apex decision-making body for all IITs. Officials highlighted concerns about the growing influence of the coaching industry and the pressure experienced by students and families preparing for the exam.The proposed adaptive testing system is intended to address several issues:
- Reduce dependence on intensive coaching
- Focus more on conceptual understanding and reasoning skills
- Make the examination less stressful for candidates
- Ensure a fairer assessment process
Education experts believe that such a system could encourage students to focus on deeper learning rather than memorising patterns of questions.
Pilot Test to Be Conducted Before Implementation
Before introducing the new format in the main exam, IIT Kanpur and the Joint Admission Board will evaluate the proposal through a pilot adaptive mock test. The results of this pilot will help authorities determine whether the model can be adopted in future JEE Advanced exams. Officials have clarified that no immediate change has been confirmed for the 2026 examination, and students should continue preparing according to the existing exam pattern until an official announcement is made.

JEE Advanced is the second stage of India’s national engineering entrance process and is required for admission to undergraduate programmes at the Indian Institutes of Technology. Key details about the exam include:
