JEE Advanced 2026 eligibility criteria include age limit, attempt limit, and JEE Main rank requirement. Candidates must be among the top 2.5 lakh in JEE Main and meet Class 12 conditions. Only those fulfilling all criteria will be eligible to appear for the exam.

JEE Advanced 2026 Eligibility Criteria, Age Limit, Attempts

Students aiming for admission to the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology must clear the second stage of the engineering entrance process — JEE Advanced. However, not every candidate who appears for JEE Main 2026 is eligible to take JEE Advanced 2026.The eligibility criteria set strict conditions related to rank, age, attempts, academic qualification, and previous IIT admission. Here’s a complete breakdown for aspirants.

JEE Advanced 2026: Key Eligibility Highlights

  • Only top 2.5 lakh candidates from JEE Main 2026 can apply
  • Maximum 2 attempts in consecutive years
  • Age limit with relaxation for reserved categories
  • Class 12 eligibility restricted to specific years
  • Previous IIT admission rules apply

Performance in JEE Main 2026 (Top 2.5 Lakh Rule)

The most important condition is performance in JEE Main. Candidates must rank among the top 2,50,000 qualifiers in Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech) to become eligible for JEE Advanced 2026. This shortlist includes candidates across all categories with a fixed reservation distribution. Only those within this cutoff can proceed to the Advanced stage.

Age Limit for JEE Advanced 2026

  • General / OBC-NCL / EWS: Born on or after October 1, 2001
  • SC / ST / PwD: Relaxation of 5 years (born on or after October 1, 1996)

Candidates not meeting the age criteria will not be allowed to appear, regardless of their JEE Main performance.

Number of Attempts Allowed in JEE Advanced 2026

Candidates can attempt JEE Advanced only twice, and that too in two consecutive years.

  • Example: If you appeared in 2025, 2026 will be your final attempt
  • Fresh candidates appearing in 2026 will also get one more attempt in 2027

JEE Advanced 2026: Class 12 Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible, candidates must have appeared for their Class 12 (or equivalent) examination for the first time in either 2025 or 2026.

  • Subjects required: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics
  • Must be from a recognised board or equivalent qualification

This ensures only recent school graduates are eligible for the exam.

JEE Advanced 2026: Previous IIT Admission Rule

Candidates who have already been admitted to any IIT are generally not eligible to appear for JEE Advanced again However, exceptions may apply in cases where admission was cancelled before the final counselling round.

Important Note on Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility framework is designed to maintain fairness and limit repeated attempts. According to official guidelines, candidates must satisfy all five conditions simultaneously—performance, age, attempts, academic qualification, and admission status—to be eligible

Why Eligibility Matters for Aspirants in JEE Advanced 2026?

With over 2.5 lakh candidates qualifying from JEE Main, competition for JEE Advanced remains extremely high. Understanding the eligibility rules in advance helps students avoid disqualification and plan their preparation strategy effectively.

Conclusion

JEE Advanced 2026 eligibility is strict and multi-layered. Simply qualifying JEE Main is not enough—candidates must also meet age limits, attempt restrictions, Class 12 criteria, and IIT admission rules. Aspirants are advised to carefully review all conditions before applying to ensure they meet every requirement for this highly competitive exam.
