The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has launched a national initiative aimed at transforming employability standards for engineering and diploma students across India. Through its Shaastra Magazine, the institute introduced the National Internship, Placement Training, and Assessment (NIPTA) program. This initiative combines skill-building training with a standardized assessment to benchmark students’ readiness for internships and employment.
Accessible Training Program for Essential Skills
NIPTA provides students with an accessible training program designed to sharpen essential skills, including technical proficiency, problem-solving, communication, and workplace readiness. The program ensures that students not only develop critical competencies but are also prepared to meet the expectations of recruiters nationwide.
Standardized Assessment and Employability Benchmark
Following the training, students undergo a standardized assessment to evaluate their employability. IIT Madras aims to set a national benchmark for internship and job readiness, helping both students and employers understand the skill levels of candidates objectively.
Connecting Students with Recruiters
IIT Madras plans to share assessment results with recruiters to streamline the recruitment process. In early 2026, the institute will organize a National Job and Internship Mela, which may be held virtually or in-person. This platform will directly connect assessed students with potential employers, offering a practical avenue to secure internships and job placements.
Transforming Employability Assessment in India
NIPTA seeks to transform the way employability is measured in India. By providing a standardized training and assessment framework, IIT Madras ensures that students across the country are evaluated fairly and consistently, creating a more transparent and effective pathway from education to employment.
