Goa University to Launch Online Degree Programmes from 2026–27

In a significant milestone for higher education in Goa, Goa University (GU) has announced that it will introduce online degree programmes beginning in the academic year 2026–27. The development follows the university’s recent achievement of an A+ grade accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.3, making it eligible under UGC norms to offer online courses.

Step Towards Digital and Inclusive Education

The move marks a major stride in digital transformation, aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which envisions achieving a 50% Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in higher education by 2035. By introducing online learning options, the university aims to make quality education more accessible and flexible, particularly for students who face challenges attending in-person classes.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Harilal B. Menon said, “Following the implementation of NEP 2020, Goa University offers flexible academic pathways ranging from one-year certificates and postgraduate diplomas to four-year honours programmes. We will now make these available online, beginning with disciplines such as humanities that do not require practical components.”

Online Programmes to Begin with Humanities Courses

Initially, the university will offer humanities courses through a hybrid model that combines live-streamed and recorded sessions. This will help students manage studies alongside employment or personal responsibilities. Officials added that the introduction of online programmes would also support working professionals and students in remote areas, encouraging wider participation in higher education.

Aligning with NEP Goals and Improving GER

According to the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2021–22, Goa’s GER stands at 35.8%, which is higher than the national average of 28.4% but still below the NEP target. The launch of online degree courses is expected to significantly increase enrolment and help bridge this gap.

Focus on Emerging Technologies

Prof. Menon also confirmed that Goa University plans to expand its online offerings to include artificial intelligence, data science, and other emerging technology disciplines. These courses will combine digital learning with short on-campus sessions for hands-on training. While Goa’s GER has increased by around 1% among students aged 18–24 over the past year, this digital shift is expected to accelerate progress. The move highlights the university’s commitment to expanding access, inclusivity, and innovation in the state’s higher education ecosystem.
