The Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT) 2026 was conducted on 4 January 2026 in a single session from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM across designated test centres nationwide. Candidates were required to report by 12:30 PM, and entry gates were closed at 1:50 PM as per guidelines. The XAT 2026 admit card, released on 25 December 2025, was mandatory for entry and had to be downloaded from the official portal xatonline.in. With the examination now concluded, initial reactions and early feedback have started pointing towards the nature of the paper and its sectional structure. A detailed analysis based on candidate responses indicates that the overall difficulty of the exam leaned towards moderate to moderately difficult, consistent with previous years’ XAT trends.
XAT 2026 Exam Pattern and Sectional Structure
The XAT 2026 question paper comprised a total of 95 questions divided across four sections: Verbal and Logical Ability (VA-LR), Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation (QA-DI), Decision Making (DM) and General Knowledge (GK). The paper was conducted in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode with a total duration of 180 minutes (3 hours).
Unlike earlier formats, essay writing was not part of the XAT 2026 paper, and the exam followed an MCQ pattern across all sections.
Initial Exam Analysis and Difficulty Insights
Early analysis based on candidate feedback suggests:
- Verbal & Logical Ability (VA-LR): Questions included reading comprehension passages and logical reasoning. Most candidates described this section as moderate in difficulty.
- Decision Making (DM): This section was reported to be moderately difficult and time-consuming, involving caselets and managerial scenarios requiring analytical judgement.
- Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation (QA-DI): Questions were largely arithmetic and DI based, and many candidates found this section to be moderate to slightly difficult due to computation intensity.
- General Knowledge (GK): GK comprised static and current affairs topics, with difficulty ranging from easy to moderate, though it did not impact percentile calculation.
Overall, the paper maintained XAT’s analytical and decision-oriented nature, balancing conceptual questions with practical reasoning tasks.
Marking Scheme and Paper Specifications
The XAT 2026 marking scheme awarded +1 mark for each correct answer, with - 0.25 marks for incorrect responses. Additionally, a penalty of –0.10 marks applied if more than eight questions were left unanswered consecutively. There was no negative marking in the GK section.
What Next After XAT 2026?
Candidates who appeared in the exam can expect the response sheet and provisional answer key to be released in the second week of January 2026, followed by the official result announcement in late January. These releases will help candidates more accurately estimate their performance and predict shortlisting chances for B-school interviews. A comprehensive post-exam review covering section-wise difficulty, expected cut-offs, good attempts and performance benchmarks will be published soon to assist aspirants in planning the next steps in the XLRI and other MBA admissions process.
