JNCASR Launches BS (Research)-PhD Programme for 2026 Admissions

The Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Bengaluru has introduced a new integrated BS (Research)-PhD programme in Interdisciplinary Sciences beginning in the 2026-27 academic year. The programme is designed to strengthen foundational scientific research and align with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 framework that promotes flexible academic pathways. According to the institute, the flagship programme will combine rigorous coursework, interdisciplinary research exposure and advanced training to prepare students for research careers in emerging scientific fields.

JNCASR BS (Research)-PhD Programme Structure and Exit Options

The integrated programme allows students to pursue research progressively with multiple exit points based on the stage at which they leave the course. The exit options are structured as follows:

  • After Year 1: Bachelor of Science (Research) – BS (Res.) degree
  • After Year 2: Master of Science (MS) degree
  • After Year 4 or later: Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree

This flexible structure follows the multi-entry and multi-exit model recommended under the NEP 2020 to enable students to continue or exit with recognised qualifications.

JNCASR 2026 Admission Process and Selection Criteria

Candidates interested in the programme must meet the minimum academic requirements and undergo a multi-stage selection process. Applicants must have:

  • A three-year BSc degree or completion of 120 credits in a bachelor’s programme
  • At least 55% marks in the qualifying examination

For admissions, the institute will consider scores from the following entrance examinations:

  • Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM)
  • Common University Entrance Test (CUET)
  • JNCASR 2026 entrance examination

Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an in-person interview, which will play a key role in final selection.

Fellowship and Academic Support for PhD Scholars

Students who continue into the doctoral phase of the programme will receive fellowships and research support as per the institute’s norms. The institute has also announced additional benefits for research scholars. Key academic support features include:

  • Travel grants up to INR 1,00,000 for attending national or international conferences
  • Access to advanced laboratories and research infrastructure
  • On-campus medical and counselling facilities for students

These provisions are aimed at encouraging research participation and providing opportunities for global academic exposure.

Focus on Interdisciplinary Research in Higher Education

The new programme reflects India’s efforts to strengthen the research ecosystem by encouraging interdisciplinary scientific training and seamless progression from undergraduate research to doctoral studies. Through this initiative, JNCASR aims to develop a pipeline of skilled researchers capable of addressing complex scientific challenges across multiple disciplines
