NIFT and NID are among the most competitive design entrance exams in India. Both institutes release cutoffs based on ranks and seat availability. While NIFT offers more seats across multiple campuses, NID has limited seats, making its cutoff significantly more competitive.
The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) and the National Institute of Design (NID) conduct two of the most competitive design entrance examinations in India. Thousands of students appear every year for admission to undergraduate design programmes offered by these prestigious institutes. A comparison of the NIFT 2026 and NID 2026 cutoff trends, seats, and exam structure helps understand which exam is generally considered harder to crack.
NIFT 2026 Cutoff Trends and Rank Requirements
The NIFT entrance exam provides admission to various Bachelor of Design (BDes) and Bachelor of Fashion Technology (BFTech) programmes across multiple campuses in India. Cutoffs vary by campus and programme, with top institutes requiring high ranks. Some previous cutoff trends include:
- NIFT Delhi Fashion Design: closing rank around 86 for open category
- NIFT Mumbai Fashion Communication: closing rank around 79
- NIFT Delhi Accessory Design: closing rank around 151
These numbers indicate that candidates typically need a rank within the top 100–200 to secure seats in top campuses. However, lower-ranked campuses may accept candidates with ranks between 1,000 and 2,500 or higher, depending on the programme and category.
NID DAT 2026 Cutoff and Seat Competition
The NID Design Aptitude Test (DAT) is another national-level design entrance exam conducted for admission to B.Des and M.Des programmes at NID campuses. The exam is considered highly competitive due to limited seats across institutes. For example, the B.Des programme has only a few hundred seats across NID campuses. Typical cutoff ranks from previous admission cycles include:
- NID Ahmedabad: around rank 48 for open category
- NID Andhra Pradesh: around rank 225
- NID Haryana: around rank 193
These cutoffs show that candidates often need to secure top ranks within a few hundred to gain admission
NIFT vs NID: Key Differences in Competition
Several factors determine the competitiveness of the two exams, including seat availability, exam structure, and selection stages. Important differences include:
- Number of seats: NIFT offers significantly more seats across many campuses, while NID has limited seats.
- Admission stages: NID involves multiple stages including prelims and mains, increasing difficulty.
- Cutoff ranks: NID cutoffs are generally lower in rank due to fewer seats and higher competition.
- Exam focus: NIFT tests design aptitude along with general ability, while NID strongly emphasises creativity and design thinking.
Because of these factors, the NID exam is often viewed as more selective.
Which Exam Is Harder to Crack?
Both NIFT and NID require strong creativity, design awareness, and aptitude. However, when comparing seat availability and cutoff trends, the NID entrance exam is generally considered harder to crack. This is mainly due to:
- Limited seats across NID campuses
- Stricter cutoff ranks
- Multiple evaluation stages including studio tests and interviews
NIFT remains highly competitive but offers more admission opportunities through multiple campuses and programmes, which slightly improves the chances of selection.
