A third-year Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) student at the Indian Institute of Technology Mandi has shared his experience of campus life, academic challenges and global opportunities, including international research exposure and internships in Germany and Japan.
From JEE Preparation to IIT Mandi
The student recounted his path to engineering, which started with rigorous preparation for JEE Main and JEE Advanced in 2023. Securing admission into IIT Mandi’s CSE programme was a meaningful milestone, especially with the institute’s scenic Himalayan campus and a supportive community that helped him transition from his hometown.
Campus Life Beyond Lectures
Life at IIT Mandi extends well beyond classroom lectures. The student participated in various clubs and technical teams, including the Quizzing Club, Writing Club, Robotics Club and Team Deimos—the institute’s Mars Rover team. Balancing academics with these activities was challenging but contributed significantly to his personal growth. Professors at IIT Mandi are described as approachable, often stepping in to support students even during tight deadlines—for example, providing recommendation letters late at night to aid internship applications.
Internships and Global Exposure
Hands-on learning through internships formed a crucial part of his academic journey. He completed internships focused on course management systems and robotics applications, which helped sharpen his technical skills and ability to meet project deadlines. Beyond domestic experience, IIT Mandi facilitated a semester exchange at RWTH Aachen University in Germany. The student also secured a robotics software development internship in Japan, contributing to his global research exposure and personal development. Such international opportunities are supported by IIT Mandi’s emphasis on research and collaborations, including partnerships with overseas universities and industry networks. Historical collaborations include ties with institutions in Germany and other countries, enabled through academic MoUs and international research partnerships
Balancing Studies and Personal Growth
The IIT experience helped the student grow more confident and vocal, enhancing leadership skills through club roles. Campus life, with its blend of academic rigour and extracurricular involvement, encouraged resilience and ownership in learning. While financial management and budgeting were essential parts of student life, the experiences abroad and in diverse clubs contributed to both academic and personal development, shaping a well-rounded educational journey. In essence, life at IIT Mandi CSE offered a mix of classroom learning, hands-on internships, leadership roles and international exposure—equipping students to engage confidently with global research landscapes.
