IIT Mandi Plans to Build 350+ Faculty and 5,000+ Students by 2027

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi has set ambitious targets to significantly increase its academic strength and student community by the year 2027. Announced during the institute’s recent Foundation Day celebrations, this expansion plan aims to boost both teaching capacity and research output

IIT Mandi Expansion Goals and Academic Growth

IIT Mandi’s leadership, led by Director Prof Laxmidhar Behera, outlined a strategic plan to grow the institute’s faculty base to more than 350 members and the student population to over 5,000 within the next few years. These goals are intended to support an enhanced academic environment and future-ready learning ecosystem.Addressing faculty and students, Prof Behera emphasised the importance of high-quality research facilities and world-class laboratories that will be accessible to all learners as the institute grows.

Foundation Day Highlights and Strategic Vision

The announcement was made at IIT Mandi’s 17th Foundation Day celebration, which featured leaders from industry and academia discussing innovation, interdisciplinary research and future technology trends. Alongside expansion plans, the institute reaffirmed its commitment to cutting-edge research in areas such as artificial intelligence, robotics and advanced engineering disciplines. These efforts align with broader goals to position IIT Mandi as a hub of innovation and national development.

Focus on Infrastructure and Student Opportunities

To accommodate the anticipated rise in students and faculty, IIT Mandi is expected to scale up its infrastructure — including modern classrooms, lab spaces and residential facilities — over the next few years. This growth trajectory aims not only to expand capacity but also to deepen the quality and scope of academic programmes, research collaborations and experiential learning opportunities for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. IIT Mandi’s roadmap toward 2027 represents a significant phase of development for the hill‑based institute, highlighting its vision to blend excellence in education with innovation and real‑world impact.
