IIT Kharagpur Seeks Approval to Launch MD Programme in India

IIT Kharagpur has applied for approval to introduce a postgraduate Doctor of Medicine (MD) programme. The proposal has been submitted to the National Medical Council before the 31 March 2026 deadline. If approved, it will mark a first for IITs in India.

IIT Kharagpur MD Programme Proposal and Approval Process

The institute has initiated the formal application process to seek approval from the concerned authorities. The proposal aims to expand the academic offerings of IIT Kharagpur into medical education.

While the Ministry of Education has supported the initiative, the final approval will be decided by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The decision involves coordination between multiple ministries. The institute is currently awaiting the response from the authorities regarding the approval of the MD programme.

IIT Kharagpur PG Medical Course Seats and Faculty Details

The proposed postgraduate MD programme is expected to begin with limited intake. The institute has already started preparations to support the new course. Key details of the programme include:

  • Initial intake of 20 seats
  • Appointment of 20 qualified doctors for teaching
  • Focus on postgraduate-level medical education

These steps indicate that the institute is preparing its academic and faculty infrastructure in advance.

IIT Kharagpur Medical Course Significance for Higher Education

If approved, IIT Kharagpur will become the first Indian Institute of Technology to offer a postgraduate medical programme. This move reflects a shift towards interdisciplinary education combining engineering and healthcare.

The introduction of an MD programme in an IIT could open new opportunities in medical research, healthcare innovation, and advanced clinical studies. It may also encourage other premier institutes to explore similar academic expansions. The final decision on the proposal is expected after review by the concerned ministries.
