IIT Kharagpur Seeks Approval to Launch MD Programme in India

IIT Kharagpur has applied to the National Medical Council to launch an MD programme with 20 seats. If approved, it will become the first IIT in India to offer a postgraduate medical course.
IIT Kharagpur has applied for approval to introduce a postgraduate Doctor of Medicine (MD) programme. The proposal has been submitted to the National Medical Council before the 31 March 2026 deadline. If approved, it will mark a first for IITs in India.
IIT Kharagpur MD Programme Proposal and Approval Process
The institute has initiated the formal application process to seek approval from the concerned authorities. The proposal aims to expand the academic offerings of IIT Kharagpur into medical education.
While the Ministry of Education has supported the initiative, the final approval will be decided by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The decision involves coordination between multiple ministries. The institute is currently awaiting the response from the authorities regarding the approval of the MD programme.
