The Ministry of Education is examining the possibility of conducting the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Undergraduates (NEET-UG) in a computer-based mode in the coming years. The National Testing Agency (NTA) is analysing data and exploring whether the transition from pen-and-paper to online format is feasible for the national-level medical entrance examination.
Scale of NEET-UG Examination
NEET-UG remains one of the largest entrance exams in India, serving as the gateway for MBBS, BDS, and allied health science admissions. Key statistics include:
- 2024: Over 23 lakh candidates appeared.
- 2025: Around 21 lakh candidates appeared.
Challenges in Implementing Online NEET-UG
Experts highlight several hurdles in transitioning to a computer-based format:
- Infrastructure Requirements: Thousands of centres with reliable internet, sufficient computers, and uninterrupted power backup would be necessary.
- Digital Divide: Ensuring uniform access across rural and urban areas poses challenges.
- Exam Fairness: Multiple slots could require normalisation of scores to maintain comparable difficulty levels.
- Security Concerns: Data breaches, technical failures, and exam integrity remain key issues.
A former Director of AIIMS, New Delhi, noted that while online exams can improve efficiency and transparency, the scale of NEET-UG makes a nationwide rollout difficult.
Possible Timeline for Computer-Based NEET-UG
Given the logistical and technical challenges, a full transition may take time. Experts suggest:
- Pilot Projects: Small-scale online tests may be conducted first to assess readiness.
- Nationwide Rollout: A complete shift to computer-based NEET-UG is unlikely before 2026.
The ministry continues to evaluate the technical feasibility, aiming to balance efficiency, fairness, and accessibility for millions of candidates across India.
