The University of Delhi (DU) will hold an open mop-up round to fill more than 9,000 vacant undergraduate seats across its affiliated colleges. Despite multiple mop-up rounds conducted via the CSAS admission portal, thousands of UG seats remain unoccupied.
DU VC’s Proposal for Spot Admissions
At the recent meeting of the Executive Council (EC), DU Vice Chancellor Prof. Yogesh Singh suggested that colleges should conduct Spot Admissions through physical mode. This would allow students to secure direct admission at colleges with vacant seats. The EC members authorised the Vice Chancellor to formulate a policy for this process, ensuring fair distribution of seats.
Change in Admission Policy
Earlier, admissions were largely based on CUET UG 2025 scores. However, DU has now moved towards considering Class 12 results for certain admissions to maximise seat utilisation.
Sports & ECA Quota Policy
The EC also discussed the Sports and Extracurricular Activities (ECA) quota. Currently, a combined 5% quota is allocated to all colleges. Within this, colleges can adopt a 3:2 ratio based on available facilities, deciding which stream receives 3% and which gets 2%.
Fourth Year Under NEP 2020
Addressing the implementation of the fourth year of UG courses under NEP 2020, Prof. Singh emphasised the need for research discussion rooms in every college to support advanced academic work.
New Guidelines for PhD Courses
The EC also approved uniform PhD course guidelines effective from the 2025-26 academic session. Key highlights include:
- Total credits required: 12–16
- Mandatory structure:
- 4 credits – Research Methodology (or Advanced Research Methodology)
- 2 credits – Research Publication Ethics
- 2 credits – Research Tools
- 4 credits – Discipline-Specific Elective Course (DSE)
- An additional 4 credits may be earned from DSE if required.
The new policy ensures consistency in PhD coursework across departments, with teaching hours counted in faculty workload.
