The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has clarified the eligibility criteria under its new two-board exam system for Class 10 students starting in 2026, noting first board exam attendance is compulsory for all students. Only students meeting specified criteria such as those in the compartment category or improvement cases can sit for the second board examination if they satisfy eligibility norms.

CBSE Class 10 Two-Exam Policy 2026: Eligibility Clarified for Second Board Test

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued an important policy clarification for Class 10 students under its newly introduced two-board examination system for the 2026 academic year. The board’s clarification details who can appear in the second board examination and under what conditions. The policy follows the introduction of dual board exams where students take the first board exam (main exam) and then have a second opportunity later in the same year to improve scores or clear specific subjects.

CBSE Class 10 2026: Mandatory First Exam and Eligibility Rules

CBSE has stressed that all Class 10 students must appear in the first board examination, and this is a mandatory requirement under the new policy. If a student does not appear in at least three subjects in the first exam, they will not be permitted to sit for the second board exam and are placed in the “Essential Repeat” category, which means they must repeat the academic year and take the main exam again next year.

Who Can Sit for the Second Board CBSE Class 10 2026 Exam?

Under the clarified rules, only students who meet specific conditions will be eligible for the second board examination:

  • Students in the Compartment category after the first exam can appear for the second exam under that category.
  • Candidates who passed the first exam but wish to improve scores in up to three subjects (such as Science, Mathematics, Social Science, and languages) can appear again in the second exam.
  • Students falling under certain improvement or hybrid categories (like compartment plus improvement) can also take the second exam.

CBSE has also indicated that only students who attempt at least three subjects in the first exam can take advantage of the second attempt.

CBSE Class 10 2026: Policy Intent and Impact

The dual examination system aims to provide flexibility and an opportunity for students to improve performance without waiting an entire academic year. However, the board’s eligibility clarification ensures students cannot bypass the first compulsory exam. Under the “Essential Repeat” rule, students missing the minimum required subject attendance in the first exam face policy consequences that align with maintaining exam integrity. Parents and students are advised to thoroughly review CBSE’s official notification and plan accordingly, ensuring they prepare and appear for the first board exam to remain eligible for the second attempt under the prescribed categories.
