Prime Minister Narendra Modi has formally inaugurated the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Guwahati, marking a significant expansion of quality management education infrastructure in Assam and the North-Eastern region of India. The ceremony was held virtually, with the academic session beginning at a temporary campus at Tech City, Bongora. IIM Guwahati is positioned as the second IIM in the North-East and the 22nd IIM in the country, following IIM Shillong.
₹555 Crore Sanctioned for Campus Development
The Union Cabinet has approved a ₹555 crore package for the institute, covering:
- Establishment and operational support for the temporary transit campus
- Development of the permanent campus at Marabhita (Palasbari) in Kamrup district
- Academic and administrative expenditure for the first five years of operations
This funding will help build the infrastructure, classrooms, faculty facilities, research centres, student hostels and other essential amenities, enabling the institute to deliver high-quality management education.
Academic Programmes and Regional Impact
The institute has started its first academic session, with management and executive education programmes under the mentorship of IIM Ahmedabad during its initial phase. IIM Guwahati plans to attract students from across India and contribute to the intellectual and economic development of the North-Eastern region. It aims to offer flagship postgraduate programmes such as MBA/PGP, as well as future management development and doctoral courses as it expands. The approval of funding and the inauguration of the institute are viewed as major steps toward strengthening higher education and leadership development in Northeast India. Development of a strong campus and academic framework is expected to enhance career prospects for students and promote regional academic excellence in management studies. This move also aligns with broader efforts to improve access to premier professional education in regions that historically had limited institutional infrastructure.
