CBSE has released the Class 10 Social Science marking scheme 2026, explaining subject-wise marks distribution, internal assessment weightage and evaluation norms for board exams.

CBSE Class 10 Social Science 2026 Marking Scheme, Detailed Explanation

The CBSE Class 10 Social Science marking scheme 2026, issued by the Central Board of Secondary Education, sets clear guidelines for evaluating students across four disciplines — History, Geography, Political Science and Economics. The subject carries a total of 100 marks, including 80 marks for the theory exam and 20 marks for internal assessment. The marking framework focuses on conceptual understanding, analytical ability and clarity in written expression.

The theory question paper assesses knowledge, interpretation and application skills

The Social Science theory paper is designed to test students’ understanding of historical events, geographical concepts, political institutions and economic processes. Questions are framed to encourage explanation, comparison and reasoning rather than memorisation.Map-based questions, source-based questions and case studies are included to evaluate practical understanding and interpretation skills.

History, Geography, Civics and Economics have defined unit-wise weightage

Each component of Social Science contributes a fixed share to the 80-mark theory paper. History focuses on events, movements and timelines, while Geography emphasises physical features, resources and human-environment interaction.Political Science evaluates understanding of democracy, governance and constitutional values, whereas Economics tests concepts related to development, sectors of economy and financial systems.

Map work and visual interpretation carry assured marks if attempted correctly

Map-based questions are a scoring component of the Social Science paper. Students are awarded marks for correct identification, labelling and placement, even if descriptive answers elsewhere are weak. The marking scheme allows step-wise credit, ensuring students are not penalised heavily for minor spelling or presentation errors in map work.

Internal assessment evaluates projects, activities and periodic performance

The 20-mark internal assessment includes project work, periodic tests, subject enrichment activities and portfolio submission. Schools assess students based on consistency, originality and understanding displayed throughout the academic year.Project work is evaluated on research quality, presentation, relevance to syllabus and timely submission.

Structured answers and use of keywords are crucial for high scores

Examiners follow point-wise marking while evaluating Social Science answers. Students must use relevant dates, terms, examples and headings to score full marks in long-answer questions. Overly lengthy responses without structure do not attract additional marks, while concise and well-organised answers are rewarded.

Balanced answer writing improves performance across all four disciplines

The marking scheme encourages students to distribute time evenly across History, Geography, Civics and Economics sections. Attempting all questions and adhering to word limits helps maximise scores. Answers should directly address the question asked, avoiding irrelevant explanations or narrative writing.
