The Central Board of Secondary Education has introduced major sectional changes in the CBSE Class 10 Board Exam 2026, bringing a stricter answer-writing format for Science and Social Science papers. The new pattern aims to strengthen evaluation accuracy and align assessments with competency-based learning. These changes will apply to students appearing for the CBSE Board Exam 2026 scheduled from 17 February 2026. Along with sectional segregation, the board has also reinforced rules on answer placement, making it compulsory for students to write responses only within the designated sections.
CBSE Class 10 Science and Social Science Section-Wise Paper Pattern
Under the revised structure, both Science and Social Science question papers will now follow subject-wise sectional divisions. This move has been introduced to ensure clearer assessment and subject-wise answer segregation. Before looking at the sectional breakup, it is important for students to understand that mixing answers across sections will lead to non-evaluation, and such errors will not be corrected even during rechecking or revaluation. This makes strict adherence to section rules mandatory in the CBSE Class 10 Board Exam 2026.
- Science Paper Sections
- Section A: Biology
- Section B: Chemistry
- Section C: Physics
- Social Science Paper Sections
- Section A: History
- Section B: Geography
- Section C: Political Science
- Section D: Economics
Students must divide their answer sheets strictly according to these sections and attempt only the relevant subject questions in the identified space.
Mandatory Answer Writing Rules for CBSE Class 10 Board Exam 2026
CBSE has issued clear instructions that will be legally binding during evaluation. Students violating these rules will lose marks without exception. Before appearing for the exam, students should carefully read and practice the new answer format using the officially released sample question papers. These papers reflect the exact sectional answer layout that will be followed in the board examination.
- Answers must be written only in the space provided for the respective section
- Inter-mixing of answers across sections is strictly prohibited
- Mixed answers will not be evaluated and will receive zero marks
- Such errors will not be corrected during verification or revaluation
Revised Competency-Based Question Structure from 2026
CBSE has also reaffirmed its earlier reform in the question paper design. From the CBSE Board Exam 2026 onward, the distribution of question types will remain fixed across subjects.
- 50 percent competency-based questions including MCQs, case-based, source-based, and data interpretation
- 20 percent select-response MCQs
- 30 percent constructed-response questions including short and long answers
This structure is designed to move students away from rote learning and focus more on conceptual understanding and real-life application.
Two Board Examinations and Official Exam Schedule 2026
In alignment with NEP 2020, CBSE will conduct two board examinations for Class 10 students starting from 2026, providing greater flexibility to improve performance. As per the announced schedule:
- CBSE Class 10 Board Exams 2026 will begin on 17 February 2026
- Mathematics Standard and Mathematics Basic will be conducted on the first day
- Class 10 examinations will conclude on 10 March 2026
- Class 12 examinations will end on 09 April 2026
These reforms mark one of the most significant structural changes in CBSE assessment in recent years.
