VIT Vellore ACM India Summer School on Systems for ML Inaugurated

VIT Vellore has officially launched the ACM-India Summer School on Systems for Machine Learning (ML) 2026, a two-week national-level initiative aimed at empowering women in advanced computing research and artificial intelligence. Hosted by the School of Computer Science and Engineering (SCOPE), the programme commenced on June 01, 2026, and brings together talented women from across the country to explore cutting-edge developments in machine learning systems and AI infrastructure.

The initiative reflects the growing emphasis on increasing women's participation in technology-driven research and innovation. Through intensive academic sessions, expert lectures and hands-on learning opportunities, the programme seeks to equip participants with the skills required to contribute to emerging fields in artificial intelligence and large-scale computing systems.

VIT Vellore ACM Summer School 2026 Begins on June 01

The ACM-India VIT Summer School 2026 was inaugurated on June 01, 2026, at the VIT Vellore campus and will continue for a period of two weeks.

The programme has been specially designed to provide an immersive learning environment for women interested in machine learning, artificial intelligence and advanced computing systems. By focusing exclusively on women participants, the initiative aims to encourage greater representation and leadership in technology research domains that have traditionally witnessed gender disparities. Participants will engage with advanced theoretical concepts as well as practical applications of machine learning systems during the programme.

National-Level Competition Sees 40 Women Selected from 293 Applications

The ACM Summer School attracted significant interest from aspiring researchers and technology enthusiasts across India. According to programme organizers, a total of 293 applications were received from candidates nationwide. Following a rigorous selection process, only 40 participants were chosen to attend the summer school.

These selected participants represent nine states across India, highlighting the programme's national reach and competitive nature. The limited intake ensures personalized mentoring, closer interaction with experts and a more focused academic experience for attendees.

Advanced Curriculum Focused on Systems for Machine Learning

The summer school curriculum has been carefully designed to expose participants to emerging areas of machine learning infrastructure and advanced computing systems. The programme covers several specialized topics, including:

  • Deep Learning Systems and Algorithms
  • Distributed Machine Learning Systems
  • Artificial Intelligence Infrastructure
  • Large-Scale Computing Architectures
  • Advanced Machine Learning Research Methodologies
  • Performance Optimization in AI Systems

These topics are increasingly important as machine learning applications continue to expand across industries, research institutions and technology enterprises. The curriculum aims to help participants understand not only machine learning models but also the underlying systems that enable efficient training, deployment and scaling of AI applications.

Experts from IITs, IISc and Industry to Mentor Participants

One of the key highlights of the programme is the participation of distinguished speakers and researchers from leading academic and industry institutions. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with experts affiliated with:

  • Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs)
  • Indian Institute of Science (IISc)
  • Qualcomm
  • Other prominent research and technology organizations

These sessions are expected to provide valuable insights into current research trends, real-world applications, and future opportunities in machine learning and artificial intelligence. Exposure to leading researchers can help participants gain a deeper understanding of academic pathways, industry expectations, and emerging innovations in computing.

Promoting Women's Participation in Artificial Intelligence Research

The ACM Summer School represents an important initiative aimed at strengthening women's participation in advanced technology fields. As artificial intelligence continues to transform industries globally, there is increasing recognition of the need to create inclusive opportunities for women in research, development and innovation. Programmes such as the ACM-India Summer School seek to address this challenge by providing access to mentorship, specialized training and professional networks. The initiative encourages women to pursue careers in:

  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Machine Learning
  • Data Science
  • Systems Research
  • Computer Science
  • Technology Innovation

By fostering technical expertise and research-oriented thinking, the programme aims to contribute to a more diverse and inclusive technology ecosystem.

How Are Candidates Selected for the ACM-India Summer School?

Participation in the summer school is based on a competitive application process. Interested candidates are required to demonstrate:

  • Strong academic foundations in computing
  • Interest in machine learning and artificial intelligence
  • Technical aptitude and research potential
  • Commitment to advanced learning and innovation

The rigorous selection process ensures that participants are prepared to engage with the advanced concepts and research-focused curriculum offered during the programme. Due to the programme's national reputation and limited seats, competition remains highly selective each year.
