CBSE OSM Window: Supreme Court Rejects Plea to Reopen It

The Supreme Court has refused to direct CBSE to reopen the post-result On-Screen Marking (OSM) verification window for students who missed the deadline. The decision was delivered on August 25, 2026.

During the hearing, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant questioned why students who wanted verification had not applied when the window was open. The court said reopening the process at this stage could affect the examination and admission process.

Why Did Students Approach the Supreme Court?

The plea was related to complaints concerning the CBSE On-Screen Marking system. Some students claimed that problems with their marks affected their eligibility for entrance examinations and admissions.

The petitioners sought reopening of the post-result verification window so that students who had missed the earlier deadline could submit the complaints and request verification of their answer sheets.

Supreme Court Rejects Request to Reopen Window

The Supreme Court declined to reopen the verification process. The court observed that the window had already remained open for a specified period and students were expected to apply within that deadline.

The court also noted that similar petitions relating to CBSE results and revaluation are filed regularly and recalled that it had not intervened in a similar matter last year.

Chief Justice Surya Kant remarked that students who failed to use the available opportunity had “missed the bus”, indicating that the deadline could not be extended at this stage.

Around 1.68 Lakh Students Applied

According to the submissions made before the court, around 1.68 lakh students had already used the CBSE complaint window. Their answer sheets were rechecked as part of the process.

The Centre also informed the court that a one-member committee had been constituted to examine complaints concerning the evaluation process.

Why CBSE Window Cannot Be Reopened

The Centre argued that reopening the window could affect the wider examination and admission process. CBSE marks are linked to several entrance examinations and higher education admissions, including JEE Main.

The Supreme Court agreed that reopening the process at this stage could lead to additional claims and create uncertainty in ongoing admission procedures.
