The UPSC Civil Services Examination 2025 has continued a trend of science and technical background candidates dominating top ranks, with an MBBS student from AIIMS Jodhpur securing AIR 1. Experts say analytical skills and structured preparation common to science disciplines may be aiding success in the exam.

UPSC Civil Services 2025 Result, Science Students Lead Top Ranks

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination 2025 result has reignited discussion on the academic backgrounds of top performers, as candidates with science and technical education dominate the top ranks. This trend mirrors recent years where individuals from scientific fields such as engineering and medicine have consistently fared well in one of India’s most competitive examinations. This year’s UPSC CSE saw Anuj Agnihotri, an MBBS student from AIIMS Jodhpur, secure All India Rank 1 with a high score, marking another instance of a science‑educated achiever at the top. In previous years, engineers from prestigious technical institutes like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have also claimed top ranks, underscoring a pattern of science‑oriented candidates excelling in the civil services selection process.

Growing Presence of Science and Technical Candidates in UPSC

Analysis of the last five to six years indicates that a significant proportion — nearly 60 – 70 percent — of UPSC toppers come from technical or medical backgrounds. This includes graduates in engineering, medicine and other scientific disciplines who consistently finish among the top ranks nationally. Experts attribute this trend to several factors that potentially give science students an edge in the UPSC environment:

  • Strong analytical skills: Subjects like mathematics and reasoning in the preliminary stage (CSAT) may be more familiar to engineering graduates.
  • Exam endurance: Long hours of study and rigorous preparation demanded in competitive science entrance exams such as JEE and NEET can build discipline useful for UPSC’s extensive syllabus.
  • Structured problem‑solving: Science education often emphasises logic and analytical thinking, which are key in tackling UPSC questions that require cause‑and‑effect reasoning.

Recent toppers illustrate this trend: engineers from IITs topped the examination in previous cycles, and this year a doctor from AIIMS has taken the top position, reinforcing the prominence of science backgrounds among high‑rank achievers.

What Experts Say About the UPSC Trend?

Education analysts and UPSC mentors suggest that modern UPSC examinations now favour candidates with a blend of logical reasoning, analytical ability and disciplined study habits — qualities commonly developed in science and technical education. However, they emphasise that success is not limited to a particular academic background; effective answer writing, adaptability to the Civil Services syllabus, and consistent preparation remain crucial for all aspirants. While the growing presence of science students in top UPSC ranks underscores a noticeable trend, experts maintain that dedicated preparation and strategic understanding of the examination pattern are vital for success across disciplines.
