The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is a key assessment for students seeking admission to engineering programmes in India. The examination consists of two stages: JEE Main and JEE Advanced, with JEE Advanced specifically for admission into the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Understanding the differences between these exams is essential for aspirants planning their preparation.
JEE Main: Admission to Engineering Colleges
JEE Main is conducted twice every year, typically in January and April. This exam determines eligibility for admission to 31 National Institutes of Technology (NITs), 26 Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and numerous other government-funded and private engineering colleges across India. It also serves as a qualifying exam for JEE Advanced.
Number of Attempts Allowed for JEE Main
Candidates can appear for JEE Main three times, including once during their Class twelve year and for the next two consecutive years. After three attempts, no further opportunities are available. Careful planning is advised to maximize performance in each attempt.
JEE Advanced: Admission to Indian Institutes of Technology
JEE Advanced is reserved for students aiming for the 23 IITs in India. Only candidates who rank among the top 250,000 in JEE Main become eligible to appear for JEE Advanced. Admission to IITs is based solely on the JEE Advanced rank.
Eligibility and Attempts for JEE Advanced
Students can attempt JEE Advanced only twice: once in their Class twelve year and once the following year. Eligibility requires that candidates have completed Class twelve with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics and qualified JEE Main within the required rank.
