The Telangana government has constituted a committee to improve the higher education system and explore new ways to mobilise finances for the fee reimbursement scheme. The panel will also focus on creating a dedicated institutional mechanism to strengthen higher education in the state.
The committee was formed after consultations between Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu and members of the Federation of Associations of Telangana Higher Education Institutions (FATHI) at Praja Bhavan. During the meeting, stakeholders shared several recommendations on financial reforms and institutional development in the education sector.
Telangana Higher Education Committee Structure
The Special Chief Secretary to Government, Welfare, will head the committee as Chairman, while the Principal Secretary to Government, Finance, will serve as Vice Chairman. Other key members include Secretaries of Education, SC, BC, Tribal and Minority Welfare Departments, the Chairman of the State Council of Higher Education, and the Commissioner of SC Development Department.
Additionally, Professors Kancha Ilalah and M. Kodandaram, three representatives from FATHI, and other eminent personalities nominated by the Chairman will also be part of the committee. This diverse panel aims to ensure broad representation and expert input in shaping education reforms.
Telangana Govt Committee Terms of Reference
According to Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao, the committee’s primary responsibility is to examine and propose measures to make the fee reimbursement scheme self-sustainable through a trust-based model. It will also develop a transparent and robust framework for rationalising financial support to students.
The committee will further analyse ways to enhance the quality and reach of higher education institutions across Telangana. Its mandate includes studying best practices, identifying gaps, and offering constructive, evidence-based suggestions for systemic improvement.
Report Submission and Next Steps
The committee has been directed to submit its detailed report within three months. Based on its recommendations, the government will initiate necessary policy actions to ensure financial sustainability and better governance in the higher education system.
