Telangana CM Demands New IIM in Hyderabad & Major Education Expansion

Telangana CM Demands New IIM in Hyderabad and Major Education Expansion during recent meetings with senior Union ministers in New Delhi. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy sought central approval for a new Indian Institute of Management in Hyderabad along with large-scale investments in school and college infrastructure. The demands aim to strengthen higher education and align central institutions with the state’s expanded administrative structure.

Push for IIM Hyderabad and Central Schools Expansion

During discussions with Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, the Chief Minister strongly pitched for establishing an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Hyderabad. He highlighted Hyderabad’s rapid rise as a national hub for technology, life sciences, aerospace, and advanced manufacturing, stressing the need for a premier management institute to support industry demand.

The Telangana government has already identified 200 acres of land at the University of Hyderabad campus for the proposed IIM. A transit campus is also ready to begin academic operations immediately. The state assured the Centre of all required approvals, infrastructure support, and clearances to fast-track the institute.

Along with the IIM proposal, the Chief Minister requested approval for additional central schools. He sought nine new Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) and 16 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) to match Telangana’s increased number of districts. The state government expressed readiness to provide land and basic facilities for these institutions.

INR 30,000 Crore Telangana Education Investment Plan Explained

In a separate meeting with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in Parliament, A. Revanth Reddy outlined a INR 30,000 crore education investment plan aimed at transforming the state’s education ecosystem. The proposal includes two major components explained below.

Young India Integrated Residential Schools (YIIRS) Plan

A total of INR 21,000 crore has been proposed for constructing 105 Young India Integrated Residential Schools (YIIRS)across Telangana.

Each YIIRS campus will include classrooms, hostels, laboratories, and sports stadiums. These schools will cater to students from Classes 5 to 12, accommodating around 2,560 students per school. The initiative is expected to directly benefit nearly 2.7 lakh students and indirectly support surrounding government schools.

College and Laboratory Infrastructure Upgrades

The remaining INR 9,000 crore will be used to modernise laboratories, classrooms, and facilities in junior colleges, degree colleges, technical institutes, and other higher education institutions across the state.

The Chief Minister requested that loans raised through a Special Purpose Centre (SPC) for these projects be exempted from Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management (FRBM) limits. He urged the Centre to view the spending as a long-term investment in human capital rather than routine expenditure.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman reportedly responded positively and asked the state to submit detailed information on the proposed SPC funding mechanism. The Telangana government stated that the proposed initiatives are crucial to meeting future workforce demands and strengthening public education across the state.
