SSC CGL 2026 selection process includes Tier 1 and Tier 2 examinations, followed by document verification and other post-specific requirements wherever applicable. The Staff Selection Commission has announced 12,256 vacancies for the 2026 recruitment drive, with Tier 1 scheduled from September 30 to October 30, 2026.

The recruitment is conducted for various Group B and Group C posts across central government ministries, departments, and organisations. Here is how the SSC CGL selection process 2026 works and what candidates need to clear at each stage.

SSC CGL 2026 Selection Process at a Glance

The examination has two computer-based stages. Tier 1 is used for shortlisting, while Tier 2 carries the main weight in the final selection process.

The SSC CGL Tier 1 exam is scheduled between September 30 and October 30, 2026. The Commission has also introduced sectional timing in the examination.

SSC CGL Tier 1 Exam Pattern 2026

Tier 1 is a computer-based examination covering four subjects. The paper carries 100 questions for 200 marks, with negative marking for incorrect answers.

Each section has a separate time limit under the 2026 examination pattern. The four sections include reasoning, general awareness, quantitative aptitude and English comprehension.

What happens after SSC CGL Tier 1?

Tier 1 marks are used to shortlist applicants for the next stage. The shortlisting is carried out according to the post preferences and applicable requirements.

For example, separate shortlisting can apply to posts such as Junior Statistical Officer and Statistical Investigator Grade-II. The 2025 SSC CGL process shows that separate lists were prepared for candidates shortlisted for Tier 2 Paper I and Paper II for these posts.

SSC CGL Tier 2 Selection Process

Tier 2 is the main stage of the SSC CGL 2026 selection process. Paper I is compulsory for all posts, while Paper II and Paper III apply only to candidates shortlisted for specific posts.

Paper I contains sections covering Mathematical Abilities, Reasoning and General Intelligence, English Language and Comprehension, General Awareness, Computer Knowledge Test and Data Entry Speed Test.

Computer Knowledge Test and DEST

The Computer Knowledge Test and Data Entry Speed Test are important parts of Tier 2 Paper I.

• Computer Knowledge Test (CKT): Qualifying in nature.
• Data Entry Speed Test (DEST): Qualifying in nature.
• DEST is conducted for 15 minutes.
• Higher qualifying standards may apply to certain posts where computer proficiency or data-entry skills are specifically required.

This means qualifying in these sections is necessary where applicable, even though they are not treated in the same way as the merit-scoring sections.

Is There an SSC CGL Interview?

There is no interview stage in the current SSC CGL recruitment process. Selection is based on performance in the prescribed computer-based examinations and fulfilment of document and post-specific requirements.

After the examination stages, shortlisted applicants have to complete Document Verification (DV). The documents submitted at this stage are checked against the eligibility conditions and information provided in the application.

SSC CGL 2026 Selection: What Determines Final Allocation?

The final allocation to posts depends on the applicable Tier 2 performance, qualifying requirements, vacancies, category, merit and the preferences submitted by applicants.

The Commission's 2025 process also used a First Round of Tentative Allocation (FRTA) and considered candidates who had submitted their option-cum-preferences and met the prescribed Tier 2 requirements.

Applicants should therefore pay attention not only to the SSC CGL exam pattern but also to post preferences, because different posts can have additional requirements.
