The number of registrations for NEET UG 2026 is expected to cross all previous records with over 26 lakh students applying for the medical entrance test. This reflects a strong surge in competition for admission to MBBS, BDS and allied health courses. The exam registration closed after the final deadline, with high student participation nationwide.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has seen a record surge in applications for the NEET UG 2026 (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test – Undergraduate), with over 26 lakh students expected to register for the exam that serves as the gateway to MBBS, BDS and other medical programmes across India. This year’s registration figures are poised to be among the highest ever since the exam’s inception, reflecting heightened interest among aspirants aspiring for careers in medicine and allied health sciences.
NEET 2026 Registration Trend and Record Count
The NEET UG registration window opened earlier in February and closed on 11 March 2026, with no further extensions announced by the NTA.
According to official estimates:
- Total registered candidates: Over 26 lakh (expected)
- Registrations this year are expected to outperform previous years’ figures, highlighting intense competition.
This increase in candidate numbers is attributed to broader eligibility and the inclusion of more allied health courses such as physiotherapy and nursing under the NEET umbrella, which has attracted a wider applicant base.
What NEET 2026 Means for Aspirants?
NEET UG remains the sole national entrance test for undergraduate medical and dental admissions in India, making it one of the most competitive examinations in the country. The high registration count indicates:
- Greater competition: A larger pool of candidates means higher cut‑off trends and tougher ranking dynamics.
- Increased exam pressure: With more peers vying for limited seats, aspirants need to focus on strategic preparation.
- Planning for counselling and state/private quota admissions is essential to optimise chances post‑exam.
What’s Next After NEET 2026 Registration?
Following registration closure:
- Correction window: Candidates were allowed to make necessary edits in their application forms during the correction period before the admit card release.
- Admit card issuance: NTA will publish the NEET UG 2026 admit cards in advance of the exam. (Typical timelines from previous years suggest late April to early May.)
- Exam schedule: NEET UG 2026 is tentatively scheduled to be conducted in May 2026 (based on official patterns).
Candidates should keep checking the official NTA NEET portal for updates on exam dates, hall tickets and guidelines.
NEET 2026 Competition and Seat Matrix
NEET serves as the qualifying exam for MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, nursing, physiotherapy and allied courses in government and private colleges across India. The increasing number of registrations underscores the aspirational rush among students for careers in the medical and health sciences sector. The high turnout this year also implies a packed competitive landscape for counselling and seat allocation, making preparation beyond the exam — including choice filling and counselling strategy — increasingly crucial for aspirants.
