NCERT Forms Team to Develop AI Textbooks for Classes 11, 12

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has constituted a dedicated textbook development team to prepare Artificial Intelligence syllabi and textbooks for Classes 11 and 12, the Ministry of Education informed Parliament. The move is aligned with ongoing curriculum reforms under the National Education Policy 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023. The initiative is aimed at strengthening technology-focused learning at the senior secondary level while ensuring conceptual clarity, practical exposure, and alignment with future workforce requirements. According to the ministry, the development process will focus on structured progression of AI concepts rather than isolated skill-based modules.

NCERT AI Textbooks to Align With NEP 2020 Framework

The ministry stated that the formation of the textbook team is part of a broader strategy to embed Artificial Intelligence education systematically within the school curriculum. The content for Classes 11 and 12 will be designed to balance theoretical foundations with application-oriented learning. NCERT has also introduced an AI-based project focused on Animation and Games in the vocational education textbook for Class 6. The project uses AI tools to expose students to early-stage computational thinking and creative problem-solving. Officials clarified that the inclusion of AI across different grades follows a graded approach, ensuring age-appropriate learning outcomes and continuity across school stages.

AI Education to Begin From Class 3 in Academic Session 2026–27

The government has reiterated that Artificial Intelligence curriculum will be introduced for students from Class 3 onwards starting in the academic session 2026–27. The rollout will follow the structure recommended under NEP 2020 and NCF-SE 2023 to promote multidisciplinary and skill-oriented education. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has already drafted an AI and computational thinking curriculum for Classes 3 to 12. As per official sources, foundational AI concepts will be introduced in lower classes, while advanced computational thinking modules will be covered in higher grades. AI and computational thinking are expected to become compulsory learning components for Classes 9 and 10, marking a significant shift in mainstream school education.

SOAR Programme to Support AI Readiness in Schools

To support nationwide implementation, the government has launched the Skilling for AI Readiness (SOAR) programme. The initiative aligns with NEP 2020, the National Programme on AI Skilling Framework, and the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047. SOAR focuses on building AI awareness among students from Classes 6 to 12 and improving AI literacy among educators. The curriculum includes 3 micro-credentials, each of 15 hours, amounting to 45 hours of structured learning under National Skills Qualification Framework guidelines. The ministry stated that the programme aims to ensure equitable access to AI education across regions while preparing students for technology-driven careers.
