JEE Main, NEET UG Difficulty Levels Under Review by Centre; Updates

The Union government has initiated a review of the difficulty levels of JEE Main and NEET UG, citing growing concerns over the increasing reliance on coaching centres and the mental stress faced by students.

JEE Main 2026 and NEET UG 2026: Panel Review

A panel led by Higher Education Secretary Vineet Joshi has been set up to examine whether the national entrance exams can be realigned with the school curriculum, including NCERT textbooks. The aim is to ensure that a larger number of students can prepare for these exams within their regular schools, reducing the need for private coaching. Both JEE Main and NEET UG are highly competitive exams offering admission to premier engineering and medical institutions. Parents and students have repeatedly voiced concerns that the current difficulty levels increase stress and make aspirants dependent on coaching centres.

What the Review Could Mean?

  • Balanced Question Papers: Questions may be adjusted to match the school syllabus, making exams more accessible.
  • Reduced Coaching Dependency: Students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds could compete fairly without heavy reliance on external coaching.
  • Student Well-being: A more student-centric exam design may help reduce academic burnout and improve mental health.

While no immediate changes have been announced, the panel’s recommendations are expected to influence the JEE Main 2026 and NEET UG 2026 exams. Updates will be shared on official portals once decisions are made.
