Candidates appearing in JEE Main 2026 online exam can reduce errors by avoiding common mistakes — such as incorrect question navigation, rushing answers, ignoring instructions and poor time planning — and following expert tips for better performance.
With the JEE Main 2026 online examination approaching, aspirants must be aware of common pitfalls that can affect scores and overall performance. The computer-based Test demands not just subject knowledge but also strategic exam management. Understanding common errors and following practical tips can help candidates perform with confidence and accuracy.
Plan Time Carefully and Avoid Rushing
Time management is crucial in the JEE Main online test. Candidates often spend too much time on one question, leaving insufficient time for others. To avoid this:
- Start with questions that you are more confident about
- Mark difficult questions for review and revisit them later
- Use the onscreen timer to keep track of time per section
Maintaining a steady pace ensures you attempt all questions without unnecessary pressure.
Read Instructions and Questions Thoroughly
A frequent mistake reported by test-takers is misreading instructions or questions under stress. Before attempting any question:
- Carefully read the instructions provided on screen
- Verify whether multiple answers are allowed or only one
- Check important elements such as units, direction words and data tables
This prevents careless errors caused by oversight or haste.
Navigate Smartly Using Onscreen Tools
The online platform provides tools such as flagging, navigation panel and review sheet. Candidates should:
- Flag questions you wish to revisit later
- Use the previous/next buttons to jump between sections
- Avoid constant toggling that can waste valuable time
Smart navigation prevents unnecessary confusion and improves focus during the exam.
Practice Mock Tests to Simulate Real Test Conditions
Regular practice with mock tests is one of the most effective ways to familiarise yourself with the online exam format. Mock tests help you:
- Understand the layout of the question paper
- Learn how to manage your time effectively
- Build confidence with the actual navigation tools
Simulated practice reduces exam-day anxiety and makes the actual test environment feel familiar.
Keep an Eye on Accuracy and Negative Marking
Accuracy plays a pivotal role in scoring well in JEE Main 2026. Incorrect answers lead to negative marking, which can reduce your overall score. To avoid this:
- Attempt only questions you understand well
- Avoid random guesses, especially in sections with tricky questions
- Use the review function to recheck answers if time permits
Maintaining accuracy even under time pressure is key to boosting your score.
Follow Exam Day Protocol Strictly
On the day of the exam, ensure you:
- Reach your centre on time if a physical reporting process is involved
- Follow all test centre guidelines and safety norms
- Keep your admit card and valid ID ready for verification
Strict adherence to exam day protocols keeps the focus on performance rather than compliance issues.
