JEE Main 2026 Jan 28 Paper Analysis: Answer Key, Difficulty, Student Reactions

The JEE Main 2026 exam on January 28 concluded, with students taking the first of two shifts of Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech). The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducted the exam with a mix of moderate-to-challenging questions in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. Based on immediate student feedback and expert reviews, the paper was considered time-consuming and conceptually demanding, with some variations in difficulty levels across shifts.

JEE Main 2026 Jan 28: Shift 1 and 2 Overview

The JEE Main January 28, 2026 session was held across multiple centers, with two shifts:

• Shift 1 (Morning Session): Conducted between 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM
• Shift 2 (Afternoon Session): Conducted from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM

Both shifts involved objective-based questions across Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. While the difficulty of individual sections varied slightly, the overall exam was rated as moderately tough, with a particular emphasis on Mathematics, which was challenging for many candidates.

JEE Main 2026: Subject-wise Difficulty Analysis

Mathematics was the most difficult, Science was moderately challenging, while Social Studies and Languages were relatively easy.

Mathematics: Lengthy and Tough

The Mathematics section was consistently reported as the most time-consuming. Topics like Calculus, Coordinate Geometry, and Vectors dominated, requiring deep understanding and careful time management. Many students noted that solving all questions in the allocated time was challenging, particularly due to the length of the problems.

Physics: Conceptually Demanding

Physics received mixed reviews across shifts. While many found the section moderate, there were still challenges with certain concept-heavy topics such as Thermodynamics, Electromagnetism, and Optics. Some questions were perceived as tricky, testing candidates’ application-based understanding rather than rote learning.

Chemistry: Easiest Section for Many

The Chemistry section was generally regarded as the most scoring. Many students found the questions from Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, and Physical Chemistry relatively straightforward. The section balanced between theory and application, making it a favorable area for those well-prepared with their NCERT fundamentals.

JEE Main 2026: Answer Keys and Solutions Released

Following the conclusion of the exam, several coaching institutes began releasing memory-based answer keys for both shift 1 and shift 2. These preliminary answer keys help students estimate their scores and gauge their performance in comparison to others. The official answer keys from NTA will be released later, but these unofficial keys provide quick insights for aspirants.

The answer keys are crucial for candidates to understand the likely cut-offs and determine whether they should prepare for the upcoming April 2026 session to improve their chances of qualifying.

JEE Main 2026: Student Reactions

Student reactions revealed a mixed bag of opinions on the exam. While many found the questions manageable, others pointed out the time constraints and the need for strategic attempt planning. As the exam is highly competitive, candidates were advised to stay calm and focus on maximizing marks in the sections they were confident about. Students also shared their thoughts on social media, with several praising the Chemistry section for being relatively easier and the Mathematics section for being particularly tough. Expert reviews suggest that candidates should expect the cut-offs to be moderate to slightly higher than last year’s, considering the challenge level of the exam.

What’s Next?

As the January session progresses, candidates who took the JEE Main exam are eagerly awaiting the official answer keys and score reports. Those who may have struggled with time management can focus on sharpening their skills for the April 2026 session. Meanwhile, the official cut-off predictions and detailed solution explanations will help candidates understand where they stand in the race for admissions to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.
