JEE Main 2026 Exam Pattern Changes, Key Highlights, Marking Scheme

JEE Main 2026 notification is expected to be released by the first week of November 2025 at jeemain.nta.nic.in. The brochure will provide all the important information about the exam, including paper pattern, syllabus, eligibility, and schedule.

While the official circular is awaited, candidates must note that several major changes introduced in JEE Main 2025 are likely to continue in JEE Main 2026 as well. Students should align their preparation strategy accordingly.

Major Changes in JEE Main Question Paper

Last year, NTA revised the JEE Main exam format to make it more streamlined. Here’s what was introduced and is expected to remain in 2026:

• Total Questions Reduced: The paper now has 75 questions instead of 90, with 25 questions each in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
• Two Sections per Subject:

1. Section A: 20 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
2. Section B: 5 Numerical Questions (all compulsory)

• No Optional Choice in Section B: Students cannot skip numerical questions.
• Marking Scheme:

1. +4 marks for every right answer
2. –1 mark for every wrong response

• Exam Duration: 3 hours (Computer-Based Test)

This structure makes the exam more focused, leaving little scope for selective attempts.

JEE Main 2026 Exam Pattern at a Glance

Students who want to take admission in NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs must adapt their preparation to this revised structure. The exam will also serve as a gateway to JEE Advanced for IIT aspirants. The table mentioned below states the overview of the JEE Main exam 2026.

What to Expect in JEE Main 2026?

There are no major changes taking place for 2026. Students who are taking the exam should expect minor shifts in question distribution across topics. The difficulty level is likely to remain consistent with the past few years. To succeed, candidates must practice a balanced mix of MCQs and numerical problems while focusing on accuracy, since negative marking applies to both sections.
