JEE Main 2025 Tie-Breaker Rules Revised, No Age/ Application Criteria

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has revised the tie-breaking guidelines for JEE Main 2025. According to the new rules, age criteria and application numbers will no longer determine ranks when candidates have identical scores. If all other factors fail, candidates will now be assigned the same rank.

The JEE Main 2025 exam is scheduled between January 22 and January 31, 2025. Students can register online until November 22, 2024, with the application process having started on October 28, 2024. Admit cards will be released three days before the exam, and the test will be available in 13 languages including English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu.

Tie-Breaking Rules for JEE Main 2025

In case candidates achieve the same Total NTA score, the following criteria will be applied sequentially to assign ranks:

  • Higher NTA score in Mathematics: The candidate with a better Mathematics score will be ranked higher.
  • Higher NTA score in Physics: If a tie remains, the Physics score will be considered.
  • Higher NTA score in Chemistry: The Chemistry score will be the next deciding factor.
  • Lower ratio of incorrect to correct answers (all subjects): Candidates with fewer wrong answers across all subjects get the higher rank.
  • Lower ratio of incorrect to correct answers (Mathematics): Evaluated if the tie continues.
  • Lower ratio of incorrect to correct answers (Physics): Checked next.
  • Lower ratio of incorrect to correct answers (Chemistry): Considered as the final subject-specific factor.
  • Same Rank: If all these criteria fail, candidates will be awarded the same rank.

Tie-Breaking Rules in JEE Main 2024 vs. JEE Main 2025

Previously, JEE Main 2024 used personal information like age and application number to resolve ties:

  • Older candidates were given preference.
  • Application numbers in ascending order acted as the final deciding factor.

These personal criteria have now been removed to ensure a more score-based ranking system.
