Japan Welcomes 1,000 Indian Researchers Under LOTUS Programme 2026

Japan has officially opened the application process for the LOTUS Programme FY2026, an initiative that aims to invite nearly 1,000 Indian Master's, PhD students, and postdoctoral researchers for funded research stays at premier Japanese universities and research institutions. This programme is part of the broader India-Japan Circulation of Talented Youths in Science Programme, which seeks to bolster scientific collaboration between the two nations while providing young Indian researchers with invaluable international exposure and career advancement opportunities.

The LOTUS Programme is specifically designed for graduate students and postdoctoral researchers who are under the age of 40 and currently affiliated with Indian universities or research institutions. However, it is essential to note that candidates cannot apply directly. Instead, applications must be submitted through a Principal Investigator who is based in a Japanese university or research institute. This investigator will act as the host for the selected participant, ensuring that the application process is streamlined and collaborative.

Application Timeline

The application window for the LOTUS Programme will remain open until June 9, 2026, at 12:00 JST. The review and selection process is scheduled to occur between June and August, with the final results expected to be announced in late August. Selected candidates will commence their research stays starting from October 2026.

Research Focus and Tracks

This year, the LOTUS Programme emphasizes emerging and high-impact research fields, including:

  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Biotechnology
  • Energy
  • Materials Science
  • Quantum Technology
  • Semiconductors
  • Telecommunications

Additionally, applicants whose research aligns with related interdisciplinary domains may also be considered. For FY2026, the programme will operate through two distinct tracks:

  • LOTUS Basic: This track supports short-term research stays of up to 12 months and focuses on establishing foundational collaborations through joint supervision.
  • LOTUS-ASPIRE: Newly introduced, this track allows for longer engagements of up to 36 months and aims to yield tangible research outcomes. It includes expanded funding support and structured evaluations of joint research results, reflecting a shift towards deeper, outcome-driven collaboration.

Financial Support and Benefits

Selected participants in the LOTUS Programme will receive a monthly stipend of approximately ₹1.4 lakh to cover living expenses, which includes accommodation. Depending on the chosen track, additional funding is available for:

  • Research activities
  • Travel within Japan
  • Collaboration expenses

While the programme covers most in-country costs, it is important to note that travel expenses from India to Japan are not included. Therefore, institutions in India are encouraged to assist with these costs. Beyond financial support, the programme offers participants access to advanced research infrastructure, opportunities for academic networking, and potential pathways to internships or employment in Japan.

Strategic Importance of the LOTUS Programme

The LOTUS Programme is strategically positioned to strengthen academic ties between India and Japan. By facilitating mobility and collaboration among young researchers, it aims to accelerate joint research output while also supporting the long-term career growth of participants. The introduction of the ASPIRE track and an increased intake target for 2026 signifies a substantial expansion in the scale and ambition of this initiative.
