Canada Study Permit Rules 2026: Proof of Funds Changes From September 1

Indian students planning to study in Canada will need to show higher funds for living expenses from September 1, 2026. The updated requirement applies to study permit applications submitted from the new effective date.

For a single student applying outside Quebec, the minimum living-expense amount will increase from CAD 22,895 to CAD 23,448. This amount is separate from tuition fees and transportation costs.

Under the revised financial requirement, students applying for a Canadian study permit from September 1, 2026, will have to demonstrate sufficient funds to cover their living expenses.

For applications submitted before September 1, the applicable amount for a single applicant outside Quebec is CAD 22,895. Applications submitted on or after September 1 will be assessed against the new CAD 23,448 threshold.

The living-expense requirement does not include the student's tuition or transportation costs. Applicants must demonstrate funds for these expenses separately. Canada's official guidance also requires applicants to show that they have enough money for their first year of studies and explain how they plan to finance the remaining period if their programme lasts longer than one year.

Canada's official guidance states that applicants must demonstrate financial capacity without relying on employment in Canada.
