India, Nigeria to Establish First IIT Campus in Africa at Suleja

India and Nigeria have announced plans to establish the first Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) campus in Africa, which will be located in Suleja, Niger State, Nigeria. The proposed institution is expected to serve as a major centre for advanced education, research, and technological innovation, strengthening India’s academic footprint in Africa. The decision was revealed during a courtesy visit by India’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Abhishek Singh, to Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa (CON), at the ministry headquarters in Abuja. The Federal Ministry of Education confirmed the development through an official post on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter).

“Nigeria and India are deepening educational cooperation as plans advance for the establishment of the first Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) campus in Nigeria,” the ministry stated. “The proposed IIT Nigeria campus, to be hosted at the Federal Government Academy, Suleja, will advance science, technology, and innovation education.”

A Landmark in India–Nigeria Educational Partnership

According to officials, the collaboration represents a new phase in the longstanding educational relationship between the two countries. The IIT Nigeria campus aims to provide top-tier science and technology education while promoting research, entrepreneurship, and innovation among African students. Dr. Alausa described the initiative as a historic milestone in bilateral relations, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda” focused on human capital and skill development.

“The IITs are not just universities; they are institutions of global excellence,” Dr. Alausa said. “This initiative will elevate the quality of technical and scientific education in Nigeria and stand as a powerful symbol of India–Nigeria friendship.”

He also lauded India’s consistent contribution to Nigeria’s educational growth through the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) programme and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) scholarships. So far, more than 27,000 Nigerian professionals have benefited from ITEC training, while numerous students have studied in Indian universities under ICCR initiatives.

Inspired by IIT Madras Zanzibar Model

India’s High Commissioner, Abhishek Singh, reaffirmed the country’s commitment to supporting the establishment of IIT Nigeria, drawing parallels to the IIT Madras campus in Zanzibar, Tanzania, inaugurated in 2023 — the first-ever IIT outside India.

He highlighted that the upcoming IIT Nigeria will follow a similar operational model, with India providing academic expertise, curriculum design, and faculty support, while Nigeria will manage infrastructure and local institutional frameworks. The IIT Madras Zanzibar campus currently offers programmes in Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Energy Systems, attracting students from across Africa and Asia. The success of that initiative has paved the way for the expansion of IITs in other parts of the continent.

What the Project Means for Africa?

Once established, the Suleja IIT campus is expected to become a regional hub for innovation and research, contributing to Africa’s growing demand for skilled engineers, scientists, and technologists. The project will also help strengthen South–South cooperation between India and African nations, creating new opportunities for student exchange, joint research, and academic collaboration. Officials noted that the campus will emphasize STEM disciplines, applied research, and industry partnerships to foster local solutions in renewable energy, digital technology, and sustainable infrastructure.

A Step Toward Global Academic Excellence

Both governments have reaffirmed their shared vision of making IIT Nigeria a global model of academic excellence. The collaboration underscores India’s broader goal of internationalizing its premier technical institutes while helping African nations build robust education and research ecosystems. With this development, Nigeria becomes the second African country after Tanzania to host an IIT campus, marking another milestone in India’s expanding global educational outreach.
