Analysis of JEE Main 2026 counselling data shows that IIT Tirupati’s Engineering Physics programme recorded the highest percentage increase in student choices. Data from the Joint Implementation Committee report indicates gains across most core engineering branches at the institute.

IIT Tirupati’s Engineering Physics Sees Sharpest Rise in JEE Main 2026 Choices

IIT Tirupati’s Engineering Physics programme recorded the most substantial percentage increase in student preference among its BTech offerings in the recent JEE Main 2026 counselling cycle, according to the Joint Implementation Committee (JIC) report 2025. The trend reflects growing interest among aspirants in specialised and traditional engineering branches at the institute.

Choice Count Growth Across IIT Tirupati Programmes

The JIC report’s analysis shows that the choice count — the number of times a programme is selected by candidates during the JoSAA counselling process — has increased across most undergraduate programmes at IIT Tirupati. Notably, Engineering Physics saw its choice count rise from 5,957 in 2024 to 7,594 in 2025, representing a 27.5 per cent jump.

  • Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) remained the most preferred branch in absolute numbers, with its choice count rising from 14,048 (2024) to 17,117 (2025) — an increase of 21.8 per cent.
  • Core engineering disciplines also saw strong growth:
    • Mechanical Engineering: 20.7 per cent rise
    • Civil Engineering: 20.5 per cent rise
    • Chemical Engineering: 20.3 per cent rise
  • The newly introduced Electrical Engineering programme also attracted significant interest with 13,420 choices in 2025.

What This Indicates for JEE Main 2026 Aspirants?

The growth in choice counts suggests that aspirants are increasingly valuing both traditional and specialised branches offered at newer IITs like Tirupati. This pattern often signals aspirants’ confidence in placements, curriculum quality, and the institute’s overall reputation. IIT Tirupati’s placement data further supports this trend: the institute reported an 83.82 per cent overall BTech placement rate for 2024, with strong outcomes particularly in CSE and Electrical Engineering.

About IIT Tirupati

Established in 2015, IIT Tirupati is part of the third generation of Indian Institutes of Technology and functions as an Institute of National Importance. The institute offers a suite of BTech programmes including Chemical, Civil, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical, Engineering Physics and Mechanical Engineering — all structured over eight semesters Students participating in the JoSAA counselling process choose institutes and branches based on their JEE Main and, where applicable, JEE Advanced ranks. Admission at IITs, including Tirupati, is typically through this national counselling system after candidates qualify the requisite entrance exams. Overall, the rising choice count for Engineering Physics and other programmes reflects aspirants’ evolving preferences and the increasing appeal of interdisciplinary and core engineering offerings at IIT Tirupati.
