IIT Bombay MDes 2026 Applications Open; Deadline 23 March

IIT Bombay has started applications for MDes and MDes by Research programmes for the 2026–2027 academic year. Candidates must complete registration by 23 March 2026, while a late application window is open until 26 March 2026 (5:00 PM) with an additional fee. Admissions require a valid CEED 2026 score, followed by written tests, portfolio reviews, and interviews.
IIT Bombay MDes 2026 Applications Open; Deadline 23 March for candidates seeking admission to the Master of Design programmes. The IDC School of Design at IIT Bombay has started accepting applications for MDes and MDes by Research programmes for the 2026–2027 academic year. Interested candidates must complete the online application process through the official portals acad.iitb.ac.in or portal.iitb.ac.in.
Applicants who miss the standard deadline will get a grace period until 26 March 2026 (5:00 PM). However, a late fee of INR 500 per stream will apply during this extended window.
IIT Bombay MDes 2026 Seat Intake and Design Specialisations
The institute has announced the total intake for the design programmes offered through the IDC School of Design. The following seats are available for the 2026 admission cycle.
- Total seats: 78
- MDes programme: 68 seats
- MDes by Research: 10 seats
The Master of Design programme is offered in the following five specialisations:
- Industrial Design
- Communication Design
- Interaction Design
- Animation
- Mobility and Vehicle Design
These programmes aim to train students in advanced design thinking, innovation, and research-based design practices.
IIT Bombay MDes 2026 Eligibility Criteria and Admission Process
Candidates applying for the design programmes must meet specific academic and entrance examination requirements. Admission is primarily based on the CEED 2026 score. The main eligibility requirements include:
- Minimum 55% marks in the qualifying degree (50% for SC/ST/PwD candidates) for MDes
- Minimum 60% marks in the qualifying degree (55% for SC/ST/PwD candidates) for MDes by Research
- A valid CEED 2026 score for shortlisting
However, IIT graduates with a CGPA of 8.0 or higher are exempted from the CEED requirement. After the application process, shortlisted candidates will go through a multi-stage selection process, which includes:
- Written test: 8 May 2026
- Portfolio evaluation
- Personal interviews
The final admission results will be announced on 1 June 2026.
How to Apply for IIT Bombay MDes 2026?
Candidates must submit their applications online through the IIT Bombay academic portal before the deadline. The application process includes the following steps.
- Visit the official portal acad.iitb.ac.in.
- Select the MDes Admission 2026 option.
- Register with a valid email ID and create login credentials.
- Enter the CEED 2026 registration number and score.
- Upload required documents including CEED scorecard, degree certificates, and design portfolio.
- Pay the application fee and submit the form.
- Download the confirmation page for future reference.
The application fee is INR 300 for General/OBC male candidates and INR 150 for female/SC/ST candidates. Candidates applying after the deadline must pay an additional late fee of INR 500 per stream. The total academic fee for the programme is approximately INR 1.24 lakh, according to the institute’s fee structure for the upcoming academic session.
