IIT Bombay, Honeywell Launch CoE for Sustainability Skills

IIT Bombay and Honeywell have partnered to establish a Centre of Excellence for sustainability skills at the institute’s Powai campus. The initiative aims to train over 100,000 students by 2030 through certificate programmes and industry-led projects.
The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay has partnered with Honeywell to establish a Centre of Excellence focused on sustainability skills and innovation. The new facility will be set up at the institute’s Powai campus in Mumbai to promote industry–academia collaboration in emerging sustainability fields.
According to an official statement, the initiative aims to train more than 100,000 students by 2030 through specialised training programmes and practical learning opportunities related to sustainability and innovation.
IIT Bombay–Honeywell Centre of Excellence for Future Skills and Innovation
The centre will be titled the IIT Bombay–Honeywell Centre of Excellence for Future Skills and Innovation. It will be developed and funded by Honeywell Hometown Solutions India Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Honeywell in India.
The initiative is designed to strengthen future skills education by integrating academic learning with real-world industry challenges. The centre will focus on areas related to sustainability, innovation, and advanced technologies that support environmentally responsible development.
Through the collaboration, students will gain opportunities to work on practical sustainability projects, research initiatives, and industry-led training programmes.
Certificate Programmes and Training Opportunities
The Centre of Excellence will introduce certificate-based programmes designed to combine theoretical coursework with practical project work. These programmes will address real-world sustainability challenges and provide students with hands-on learning experiences. Key features of the programmes include:
- Industry-oriented curriculum focused on sustainability skills
- Hands-on projects addressing real-world environmental challenges
- Opportunities for research and innovation in sustainable technologies
- Collaboration between industry experts and academic faculty
The programmes will be open to undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral students from institutions across the country.
Industry–Academia Collaboration for Future Skills
The initiative highlights the growing importance of collaboration between industry and academic institutions in developing specialised skills for emerging sectors.
By establishing the new Centre of Excellence, IIT Bombay and Honeywell aim to create a platform that supports innovation, research, and workforce development in sustainability-focused industries.
The centre is expected to play a significant role in preparing students for future careers in sustainable development, environmental technologies, and innovation-driven sectors, while also contributing to India’s broader sustainability goals.
