IGNOU Launches BSc in Fabric & Apparel Design with Exit Options

Programme Introduced Under NEP 2020 Flexible Education Model

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has launched a new Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Fabric and Apparel Design under the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) framework aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The newly introduced course aims to provide students with flexible learning opportunities while strengthening employability prospects in the textile and fashion sectors. The programme incorporates the multiple entry and exit structure recommended by NEP 2020. Under this system, students can exit the course at different stages depending on their academic goals and receive relevant qualifications. Learners completing one year of study will receive a certificate, while those finishing two years will be awarded a diploma. Students who complete three years will obtain a bachelor’s degree, whereas those pursuing the full four-year duration will be granted an honours degree.

Focus on Skill-Based Textile and Fashion Education

The newly introduced course is designed to develop practical and technical expertise in various aspects of textile and apparel design. The curriculum includes training in fabric analysis, garment construction, fashion technology, apparel production, and design innovation. The programme also aims to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry requirements by focusing on skill-based education. IGNOU has structured the programme to cater to students interested in the rapidly expanding textile and apparel sector, which continues to generate employment opportunities in India and abroad. The course is expected to support both fresh learners and working professionals seeking specialised knowledge through open and distance learning.

Enhancing Career Opportunities in Creative Industries

With the launch of this programme, IGNOU intends to promote interdisciplinary learning and creative skill development. Graduates of the course can explore career opportunities in fashion designing, textile manufacturing, apparel merchandising, fashion technology, and retail sectors. The flexible learning format also allows students to pursue internships, entrepreneurship, or professional engagements alongside their studies. The FYUP structure further allows students to re-enter the programme after exiting, ensuring continuity in education. This initiative supports lifelong learning and accommodates diverse academic and professional aspirations. IGNOU officials highlighted that the introduction of the BSc in Fabric and Apparel Design aligns with the university’s objective of expanding industry-relevant academic offerings. The programme is also expected to contribute to strengthening India’s textile and apparel ecosystem by producing skilled professionals equipped with modern design and production knowledge. Students interested in enrolling in the course can apply through IGNOU’s official admission portal once the application process opens.
