The Bihar National Health Mission (NHM) has updated the Community Health Officer (CHO) 2026 recruitment criteria to allow GNM‑qualified nurses to be eligible for the programme. The mission has also announced 1200 training seats for the Certificate in Community Health (CCH) course under the CHO initiative.
The Bihar National Health Mission (NHM) has shared a key update for the Community Health Officer (CHO) 2026 recruitment process. According to a recent notice, candidates who have completed General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) are now considered eligible for CHO roles, expanding opportunities beyond the traditional B.Sc Nursing qualification.
GNM Eligibility for CHO 2026 Recruitment
In a notice issued by the Bihar Health Department, it was confirmed that GNM‑qualified candidates will be eligible to apply for the NHM CHO 2026 positions, provided they meet other standard eligibility criteria. This move broadens the pool of applicants and allows more nursing professionals to participate in the recruitment process for community healthcare roles. Traditionally, Community Health Officer posts under the National Health Mission have required candidates to hold a B.Sc Nursing degree with an integrated Certificate in Community Health (CCH). The updated eligibility allows GNM holders with the required CCH training to be considered for these positions as well.
1200 CCH Training Seats Announced
Alongside the eligibility update, authorities have announced 1200 training seats for the Certificate in Community Health (CCH) programme for 2026. This training is essential for candidates seeking to qualify as Community Health Officers, as it equips them with specialised skills required for primary health centre (PHC) and community health work. The announcement of additional CCH seats ensures that a larger number of eligible nursing graduates can complete the mandatory training, thereby strengthening the workforce available for community health delivery across the state.
What This Means for Nursing Candidates?
The inclusion of GNM qualification in the eligibility criteria provides relief to many aspiring healthcare professionals who were earlier restricted by the requirement of a B.Sc Nursing degree. Nursing graduates who have completed or are willing to complete their CCH certification now stand eligible to pursue CHO roles, significantly widening career opportunities in community healthcare. Candidates are advised to stay updated with official NHM notifications and follow guidelines regarding application processes, training registration, and recruitment schedules as they are released by the Bihar NHM.
