The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, the conducting body of GATE 2026, successfully held the Life Sciences (XL) examination on February 7, 2026, in the morning shift from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM. According to student feedback and expert reviews, the overall difficulty level of the GATE 2026 XL paper was moderate to tough.Candidates reported that while the General Aptitude (GA) section was relatively easy and scoring, the core XL sections included tricky Multiple Select Questions (MSQs) and calculation-intensive Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions, making time management a challenge.

  • Biochemistry (XL-Q): Mostly direct and concept-based questions
  • Botany (XL-R): Comparatively easy and straightforward
  • Microbiology (XL-S): Moderate difficulty with conceptual focus
  • Food Technology (XL-U): Easier than other optional sections
  • Zoology: Considered the most challenging by candidates
  • Chemistry (XL-P): Questions from atomic structure, thermodynamics, and biomolecules; rated moderate

Most optional sections featured concept-driven MSQs, while NAT questions were time-consuming, especially in Zoology and Chemistry.

Based on initial reactions:

  • Expected XL Cut-Off: Likely to remain in the moderate range due to balanced difficulty

Students who prepared using previous 15 years’ GATE question papers found the exam more manageable, particularly in the General Aptitude section.
