GATE 2026 Exam Analysis Live: Shift-Wise Difficulty, Cut-Off & Answer Key

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2026 commenced on 7 February 2026, with multiple papers conducted across two daily shifts. Live exam analysis is being compiled based on student reactions, expert review and question trends from the day’s tests. Candidates who appeared for the exam are sharing feedback on the difficulty level and question patterns for shifts conducted so far.

GATE 2026 Exam Overview and Shift Timings

The GATE 2026 examination is being administered in computer-based test (CBT) mode by IIT Guwahati, spread over four days — 7, 8, 14 and 15 February 2026. Each day has two shifts:

  • Shift 1: 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM
  • Shift 2: 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM

The pattern is consistent with past years, comprising MCQs, MSQs and NAT questions with a total of 100 marks per paper, including General Aptitude plus subject-specific sections.

Shift-Wise Review: Difficulty Levels

Shift 1 (Morning Session)

Candidates reported that the morning session maintained a mix of conceptual and application-oriented questions. Early reactions describe the paper as moderate with a few challenging bits, especially in core subject sections. Common student feedback acknowledged that conceptual clarity and strong fundamentals helped in solving the majority of questions efficiently.

Shift 2 (Afternoon Session)

The afternoon session for other papers saw a similar profile, balancing reasoning-based and technical questions. Initial assessments suggest that Numerical Answer Type (NAT) and Multiple Select Questions (MSQs) influenced time management, making the afternoon paper’s difficulty lean moderate to tough in certain segments.

Section-Wise Difficulty and Trends

While detailed section-wise summaries are still being compiled, early reactions indicate:

  • General Aptitude was largely found easy to moderate.
  • Core technical sections saw mixed difficulty, with analytical problems requiring deeper subject understanding gaining prominence.
  • Use of MSQs and NATs played a strategic role in differentiating attempt levels across shifts.

Expected Cut-Off and Answer Key Status

Official cut-off marks for GATE 2026 are yet to be released. However, based on trends from last year’s GATE cut-offs and the reported difficulty this year, qualifying marks in many papers may align closely with previous years’ thresholds — typically around the 25-30 mark range for general category in several disciplines. Unofficial answer keys and question paper PDFs are being shared online by coaching institutes and exam forums soon after each shift concludes. These help candidates estimate probable scores ahead of official answer key releases.

What Candidates Should Do Next?

Students who appeared for the exam can:

  • Cross-check memory-based questions and unofficial keys to estimate scores.
  • Review performance based on difficulty feedback.
  • Prepare for official answer key release and objection filing process.

Official notifications regarding GATE 2026 final answer key, result declaration date and cut-off marks will be published on the GATE 2026 portal once available. Stay tuned here for live updates and detailed analysis for all GATE 2026 shifts and subjects as the exam progresses.
