Delhi Schools Closed Today: GRAP 3 Curbs Imposed, Hybrid Classes Begin

As air pollution levels in Delhi-NCR worsen, authorities have implemented GRAP 3 restrictions, pushing several schools to adopt hybrid learning modes. The capital continues to face alarming smog levels, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) dipping into the ‘very poor’ and ‘severe’ categories across many parts of the city. According to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), multiple zones including Anand Vihar, Jahangirpuri, and RK Puram recorded AQI readings above 400, posing severe health risks. Residents have reported irritation in the eyes, throat discomfort, and respiratory distress due to the thick layer of smog covering the skyline.

Delhi Pollution Crisis: Schools Shift to Hybrid Mode

While the Directorate of Education (DoE) has not released an official notification on complete school closure, most schools across Delhi-NCR have begun operating in hybrid mode to protect students’ health. This move allows classes to continue both online and offline, depending on local air quality conditions. Education officials stated that the situation is being monitored closely and any further decision on extending closures will depend on AQI trends in the coming days. Parents have been advised to keep children indoors as much as possible and avoid outdoor activities.

GRAP 3 Restrictions: What’s Been Imposed

Under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) Stage III, stringent measures have been enforced to control pollution levels. These include:

  • Ban on non-essential construction and demolition activities, except for critical projects such as healthcare, metro, and defense.
  • Closure of polluting industries and brick kilns not using approved clean fuels.
  • Restriction on diesel generator sets used for non-emergency purposes.
  • Ban on older vehicles — BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel four-wheelers cannot operate in Delhi and NCR districts.
  • Enhanced road cleaning, including mechanised sweeping and water sprinkling.
  • Ban on open burning of waste or garbage in public spaces.
  • Work-from-home directives for government and private offices to reduce vehicular traffic and emissions.

Authorities have also increased vigilance and on-ground inspections to ensure strict compliance with the restrictions.

Situation in Neighboring States

The air quality crisis has also spread to neighboring regions. In Gurugram, Noida, and Ghaziabad, AQI readings have crossed the 350 mark, prompting similar restrictions. In Bihar, schools remained closed today (November 11) due to the second phase of polling, adding to the list of regions affected by either pollution or administrative reasons.

Public Advisory

Doctors have urged residents to wear N95 masks, use air purifiers indoors, and avoid outdoor exercise during morning hours. Those with respiratory illnesses or heart conditions are especially advised to stay indoors. With the pollution crisis deepening, Delhi’s shift to hybrid education highlights the growing intersection between public health and education policy during environmental emergencies.
